It what ways do they differ from the non-sub AX40?? Or another way to put it; what are the upgrades on the AX40 in comparison? I know the "toggle" switch is one.

I'm not sure as I've never played either. I did buy an OLP MM1 the other day that was surprisingly very good especially for $165.
The AX 40 has a Floyd Rose and the Sub AX3 does not. The Sub AX3 has a tone knob where I don't think The AX 40 does.
I heard one youtube clip of someone playing the Sub AX3 and the clean tone sounded great, however, this persons choice of distortion was irritating ............

The body wood is different (Jabon which local to Indonesia and similar to Basswood in tone and weight), the top on the AX3 (modeled after the AX30 which is why no Floyd) is photo whereas the AX30 has a veneer top. Bridge isn't stamped with the brand logo. SBMM instruments are inspected and final setup is done in Orange CA whereas the S.U.B. series is handled overseas. No locking tuners but can be purchased aftermarket. Not entirely sure but I believe there isn't a gig bag that comes with it.

Other than that, I believe the neck profile and body are identical. Fit and finish looked very high end.

These are all ways of saving money and passing along an extremely affordable instrument to the buyer.

They are geared towards the Squire market as an entry level instrument but they far surpass any entry level instrument I've played. They really do feel incredible and look the part as well. I haven't plugged one in but I trust the sound is descent.
