Hello all!

I just bought a black SUB 4 w/ the active preamp. I picked it up in GC and it felt great! I was always holding out for a Stingray, but the bass just talked to me.

I actually like the metallic pickguard too...

The bass sits real nice in the mix with my classic rock band. I mainly own and play MIA Fenders, but I gotta say that the SUB will be out on my next gig. Hats of to EB for making a real nice MIA bass for such a great price!

Actually, if I could have picked up a used stingray for $574, you are right.

Even if I paid full retail, and then looked for a used stingray for $799 it would be a deal for sure. $799 is a good price for a used one...not impossible, but not very common.

The SUB enables someone to just walk into a music store and buy a good MIA bass brand new for a good price, and that was the point of my post.

I think your going to really like your sub.
I had one before I traded it in for a SR5.

If later you want order a pic guard from your store. They fit right on becouse the guitar is built on the same jig. Fits like a glove. I put a white perl on my black sub and it really dressed it up. also you can take the pick guard off and reinsert the screws and it looks cool becouse its finished the same under the guard. Pick guard cost me $44.00 at my store.

what ever you do just play it and love it.

Cool man! I actually like the pickguard believe it or not....it's different, but so is the Bongo and I think that's cool too.

I just joined here, and have always been a Fender player pretty much. I can see that some Stingray owners might feel the same way about the SUB as I did when Fender released the Highway series compared to my MIA Fenders. Pissed!

I do give credit to EB though for making the SUB totally in the USA, where as the highway series has some Mexican parts but is advertised as MIA.

I didn't need the bass as I already have 15...but it talked to me.

Another thing I like about the finish of the SUB is that when you hit someone over the head with it, it's still gonna look brand new!

I know more than one full-time professional bassist with a SUB in the arsenal.

The SUB hits a certain price point that Stingrays and Sterlings will not hit, generally not even in the used market unless the Sterling/Stingray has been particularly abused. A used Stingray/Sterling is a great deal at 700 and a good deal at 800-850. This young man paid $574 dollars and has a brand new made-in-the-USA bass with factory warranty and no one else's gunk on the fingerboard. And - oh yeah: it's a Musicman.

That's hard to beat, ain't it? Of course it is. Those of us with more money are still going to pay the higher (and yet still reasonable) prices for our Sterlings, our Stingrays and our Bongos. But the SUB gives everyone a chance to get Musicman quality, to get their foot in the door, as it were...and I would imagine that those happy SUB owners, when they decide to change or upgrade or add to their burgeoning collection of bass instruments, will consider the quality and value they got from their less expensive Musicman bass and say, "Hmm, I think I'll have a Stingray!"

Or, of course, a Bongo or a Sterling. These EBMM guys.....they ain't dumb, eh?

Now I admit that I had a bit of a twinge when I started seeing the OLP stuff. It is an awful lot like being a Fender owner when the Squiers started hitting the market (and yes, I was around even way back then, when pterodactyls darkened the skies). But again, if my argument holds true for the SUB, and I think it does, isn't it exactly the same thing for the OLP owners? Not too many serious players are buying OLPs. It really is, moreso than the SUB, an entry-level bass. Many OLPs will be played for a few months and then either wind up on eBay or stuck in a closet while the purchases moves on to a new hobby. Bass playing was just not for him/her. It happens. But out of all those entry-level buyers, a certain percentage will fall in love with the instrument itself and decide to move UP rather than out. If the OLP appealed to them as an entry-level purchase, we already know they like the basic design of the MM basses, so - what will their step-up instrument be? If they have any sense - and if the OLP did a decent job of meeting their beginners' needs - they'll most likely at least seriously consider a Stingray.

So next time you wanna be uppity about it, and I fight the urge myself from time to time, think about it from a marketing point of view. Crazy like a fox, these EBMM guys.

See that? And I'm not even that young :D

I guess the catcher for me was the fact that the SUB is totally MIA (if I'm correct about that). The Fender Highway series isn't (but is advertised as so) and is around the same price.

Just a hats off to EB.

I like the pickguard in a Harley Davidson sort of way too. If I get sick of it, I'll put a black Stingray one on it.

Plus, when recording, I'm willing to wager that 99% of everyone couldn't tell the difference between that and an actual Stingray.

Is it gonna take the place of my Fender FMT V? It's not intended too, but I am really stoked to play it at my next gig. You never know!

That's the risk you take with a newbie. You can do a lot of damage with a bass. ;-)

How does the finish feel? I noticed whilst at Guitar Center that the finish isn't smooth and shiny like the StingRays but lacking luster and sorta "bumpy."

I got distracted by the impressive StingRays and Bongos. Since the S.U.B. is probably gonna be my next MM bass, it would have been a great chance to try it out. I blame the shiny SR's and Bongos. :D

Lync, good sir, 'tis I, one and the same, but then how many bovinehosts could there possibly be?

I'm a bit more active over here than at the FDP since I tend to be more of an EBMM guy. (I do love my Fenders, though.)

Glad to have you around!

It hasn't bothered me so far. The only change I am thinking of doing is to add a thumb rest (I normally play Fender P's and J's). Didn't seem like an issue though. The painted back of the neck IMO feels real nice!

Bovine-thanks! This might open up a whole new world for me. I never totally checked out MM before (probably 'cause I'm a cheap-ass and always just buying clearance stuff-almost all of my Fenders have been on some kind of blowout), but man the SUB is pretty nice.

I'll be playing more EB stuff in the future.
