G'day Mateys,

I've been thinking about a new Duncan or DiMarzio pickup for my SUB to replace the JB that I have in there now. I play in a punk band playing rhythm and my other guitarist and I share lead duties. I'm thinking about something aggressive that will work with the nuances that the Mark V possesses.

I have been living on the Duncan and DiMarzio websites for the last few days, but I figured I'd ask people that may have already experimented with different pickups.

Which ones are your favorites?

Thanks gang

I have a Seymour Duncan JB in mine, it sounds awesome. I'm thinking about putting one in my JP too.

I like alot of punk and their sounds are not overly distorted all the time. The amp is important too.

Welp, I decided to give the Duncan Custom a try. I found a place that had the trembucker so I grabbed it up and put 'er in...

So far so good, I was really trying to go with that NOFX tone where it's got plenty of distortion but a good crunch. Turns out that Eric Melvin, one of the guitarists uses this pickup in his guitar.

I like his sound too. Sub will make a great punk guitar. Surprised you didn't like the stock pickups. Hows the crunch on that Mesa?

The crunch on the amp is great! I really love the Mark V. I posted before that I had a couple of Mark IV's over the years and wasn't able to get as many useable sounds out of them as I can with the Mark V. I can make use of all three channels with this amp. I love it!!!

As far as the stock pickup, I remember that when I first got the guitar, I was playing it through my JCM900. I wasn't getting the tone that I was looking for so I swapped it out for the JB Trembucker that I just replaced. Perhaps in the end, it wasn't the pickup that was the problem, but the amp. That being said, if I decide to experiment with different pickups in this guitar again, I will start by trying out the original stock pickup first.

x2n is what I put in mine, looks very cool and sounds great to my ears anyway.
Would love to try a bunch of different p/u s some day seeing as this is only a one p/u guitar and I am leaving it this way.

I was gonna suggest a JB, but since you're moving AWAY from a JB, the Custom would've been my next suggestion.

I've tried the Custom in it's stock form and with an Alnico 8 - throwing in an Alnico 8 in there as opposed to the stock ceramic mag gave the pickup a little bit of Alnico-flavored crunch and sag, but still retained the basic character.

I've also had good luck with Dimarzio Evolutions and FREDs, as well as the Duncan Custom family (my fave being the Custom 8 variant) and Screamin' Demon. I currently use a JB with an Alnico 8.

I've been pretty pleased with the Custom so far, but now I've been thinking about trying some Dimarzio pickups like the Crunch Lab.
