here's a question...

and mind you i'm not big on modding my EBMM guitars... but was wondering if anyone has made a SUB into a SSS config... kicking around the idea of tracking down a sub to throw in three singles...

just a thought... and mind you i wouldn't do anything to destroy the body (ie no routing)

Hello

The SUB does not have a "swimming" pool under the plate. Thus if you want an SSS configuration, some wood work has to be done.

I think there are two good options to "mod" the SUB. One is Seymour Duncan P-rails and the other would be some GFS P90 style pickups.

Yes, I modded my blackie hardtail sub 1 with an SSS guard. Used three DiMarzio velvets in it and it sounded great. Good old $trat vibe. I sold it to a performing musician in England, who was happy with it too. As fbecir already mentioned, you will have to do some routing on the body. Which really isn't hard if you are good with woodworking. I just picked up a strat single coil router template from stewart macdonald and plan on routing out a couple more of my sub 1s. Need to get a new and better router bit with ball bearing guides first. Both will be done to mount Silo Spec guards, one white pearl with suhrs and one black pearl stock. Since I procured another real MIJ $trat there isn't a reason to do another SSS guard. I did like it and as I'm sitting here I'm wondering why in the world I sold it.. can't recall, weird though, because at that time I had no SSS guitar. I'll see if I can find the picture of the SSS installed on sub 1.

I guess a person could just "swimming pool" rout the Sub 1 body. Personally, I don't want to remove any more wood than necessary.

PS - I was $tratless for quite awhile but realize I seem to have an affinity for them. My left hand seems to like the necks on the 62's. I know..... shame shame shame ... :)

BTW - if you're going to go with gfs, go with the mean 90s, and they are p90 in a humbucker case. The Duncan phat thingies don't really sound like real P90s (fyi) The mean 90s have more mids and bottom end and sound more like a real original p90. They also have the top end sparkle.

.02 cents

a swimming pool style rout would sure be easier to do. just use some double sided tap and tape down a straight edge on a side, rout some, move the straight edge, rout some, etc, etc... until the whole rectangular area is routed out.

but, it wouldn't look very vintage... even the Silo isn't a true swimming pool rout.. it's more of a three hummer type rout.

Another good option is to just play a Sub as is. The stock pickups are goooood! I don't know what it is about the bridge pickup but the eq curve is about exactly what I want to hear.

Both my Silos have had swimming pool routes, but they are 6 bolts. I'll post a pic when I have time.So true vintage Silos (89 & 90)are S.P. routed .
