Hey. I own a 30th sr and a 20th sr5 hh. I need some advice on getting my basses to sound good thru for industrial type music, think fear factory and mudvayne. I play mostly jazz and rock, but Im halping a friend out and he says my rays sounded to pretty and mellow. Any suggestions I can get for sounding addequate for this. I play finger and slap style btw thru a mesaboogie rig. powerhouse 1000 and bigblock head.

lots of mids, more treble than you think nessisary...you just don't want the sound to be mud...at least from my experience

In that situation mids are your best friend. Our guitar player plays an old SG through a 100 watt Marshall head and I cut through like butter now.

I LOVE the Bongos:D

Play fingerstyle over the pickup, and dig in hard. Use fresh strings. On the bass EQ, keep bass and mids flat and boost treble by 10-20%. Get your amp into slight overdrive. If your StingRay then still sounds "pretty", I'm lost...

My band is a heavy metal band too, though maybe not as heavy as the bands you mentioned and I get a very aggressive sound out of my SR. As others have mentioned, you'll need to use Mids. On my bass, I set mine slightly above flat, my Lows are at about 60% to keep the boom my band likes and I put in only about 20% highs to keep the clackiness out. On my Ampeg amp I set my Lows and Highs to Maxx, and then my Mids to 75%, then Graphic EQ is set at zero for my lows and low mids, but starting in the middle of the Mids I create an upward bell shape all the way back to the highest of highs, which puts my highest frequency back at zero. I think this is called the "Brillance" EQ. Anyway, I can turn my Graphic EQ on and off for an extra punch, if I really need to cut through- and then I turn it off when I want more of a low growl or want to slap without a lot of noise cutting through. Of course for me Compression is must for me.

I hope this helps/makes sense.

My friends' band is called Domeshots. Here's a couple of their songs to hear.

He plays a Sterling through the same amp you have: Mesa BigBlock with powerhouse cab, plays only fingerstyle and grinds like there no tomorrow. Killer tone!!! He says he uses the ovedrive on the BB750, you should try it too.
