supersport MM......pickup noise, Help !

Hi,

Seem to be getting a nasty noise from the pickups on my MM90 Supersport. Sounds like a dodgy valve or lead, but its not. Been running it through a couple of Visual Sound pedals into a Cornford Hurricane, the noise seems less when both pickups switched 'in' than indivdually. Battery is new in the Silent circuit. If I plug in my Levinson Blade, there's no problem, so surely it must be the guitar. Anybody got any ideas ?

Also just noticed that if I take the battery out of the Silent Circuit, the noise disappears. Could put up with that, but ....I can't use the piezo

I dunno Kev... If I were you I'd be hauling that guitar back to the shop where I bought it - sounds like there's something going on with the Silent Circuit board, and since it's under warranty, I'd let the dealer take care of it...

It's not new Jimi, dunno how old it is. swapped it for my Les Paul.
You could be right about the silent circuit board though

You should probably write directly to Ernie Ball for support on this issue as well... I don't know if The P-Man heard from anyone at Ernie Ball or not...

Thanks for that, P-man seems to be talking about hum, my noise sounds more like a dodgy connection, kind of erratic. I don't find the hum too much of a problem even without a battery in, it's just that I can't make use of the piezo without it.

perhaps I'll follow up on your suggestion and contact EB directly, or hopefully a moderator will see this.

Doesn't seem to be a massive problem with mine to be honest. The neck has got slightly more hum than the other hum-cancelling positions which is to be expected (Silent Circuit or not) - nothing major though.

First off I'd like to thank you both for the info you gave in the previous posts.

As you know I am the repair dude at a music store here in town. It sounds like you might need to talk to EB ... However not hearing the problem and messing with it in person here's what I'd do. .... I bet you both did all this but who knows.

First plug the guitar in and get the problem to act up. (I had a Hamer Duotone last week that had a similar sounding glich)
I turned ALL of the piezo adjustment thingys up and then down....one at a time while still plucking the guitar. Sure enough the mini pots just nedeed to ALL be move up and down with a little screw driver ..... back and forth ...up and down ...you get the idea .... this cleared out the small glitches(dirt or corrosion) and the piezo now works great. Also just for kicks use a big magnifying glass and double check all the soidler connections ...this too can cause a doggy like sound.

I hope this helps, it's hard to trouble shoot without having it in my hands.

I don't get any unwanted noise at all when using piezo. The reason I can't use the piezo if I take the battery out is because it appears to be dependent on it being in. The noise only occurs with battery in and switched to magnetic pickups. It reduces significantly when in the ' middle ' position (both pickups). If you still think that moving the saddles might have an effect , then I'll give it a go.

Would be nice if one of the moderators could offer some advice here....... meanwhile I'll be piezo- less and noise free for the weekend.

It's not the saddles I messed with .... it's the treble and bass and blend mini pots that I adjusted (basically just truned them up and down a few times) There inside the guitar under the back plate. or that least they should be.

There's one other thing that is a must and I bet you have one all ready .... A Good Shielded Instrument Cable and proper grounding of the power from the wall. Also again this is silly but I have to mention it ..... Anytime I get close to my amp with certain guitars they make all kinds of noise ... but I move away from the amp about 5-8 feet and all is well.

Please forgive me if I sound silly, I'm just trying to help you out.

Please don't think I found your suggestions silly, I just didn't want to go messing around with the piezo as it works fine as it is. However if you think that these adjustments will have any effect on the noise, which only occurs when on the magnetic pickups ,then I'll give it a go.

Re cables -you are right , I've recently invested in new high quality cables.

The problem only occurs with the EB plugged in, whichever amp. My Blade i have no problem with.

Do you think there are any moderators out there these days that might read this ?

Guys,

Thanks for being patient. I have posted on some other threads but I will here as well.
The repair department would like to speak to the person who may have a electrical problem
first. We can figure out what wrong and then post for anyone else interested,rather then post a bunch of troubleshooting idea's back and forth. The silent circuit can be a little complicated.

Just to keep you up to date.

The noise problem has been sorted out courtesy of Strings and Things (UK distributors) and help from EBMM. Seems that it was a dodgy Silent Circuit which was replaced, along with a new battery compartment, even a new battery and screws for the backplate which were missing. What's more - all free of charge ! What service !!. Fantastic
