sustain question on my stingray

Hi,

I've recently bought a stingray 5HH, very sweet to play, amazing tones. However... I've found about 4 notes notes which decay over like 2 seconds! a little annoying mid song! I don't know whether i need to fiddle with the action, get new strings, or pray for mercy?

Can anyone shed any light in this problem?

Any help would be appreciated.

Heya Neil, i had 3 dead notes on my Fender Jazz bass recently too... Im not an expert at bass either so i was so confused. I never played the bass though cause i have a MM stingray but i decided to change strings cause the strings on the Fender were about 8 months old... after i changed the strings, all the fret buzz was gone! Every note was able to be played and sounded nice and clear. Could be a bad setup on the strings. who knows

If you bought it "used", you may need to have a tech check it out. If you bought it "new" talk to your dealer and/or give customer service a call. That'll do the trick for ya!

Sounds like a a new set of strings are in order.

There are certain known areas for so-called "dead spots" on various bolt-on instruments. Four of those is highly unlikely, especially on a Stingray 5.

Change the strings. Consult the guide to setups. Make sure your relief is set properly. My bet is you find big improvements.

Meanwhile, remember that this is the internet and no one - not even me, and I have special powers - can see your bass or play your bass over the internet.

sweet thanks all, lots to try i suppose, i bought it used with new strings, but i'll put some new ones on... what is relief by the way? neck? action height?

Just out of curiosity: What are those four notes that do not sustain as expected?

notes are f# g# and C# (lower) and one i can't remember where as b on the a string will last forever...

My brand new Stingray 5 HH had a few dead spots. I also noticed that the B string would not intonate and it sounded like there was a slight phasing effect on it. There was only about 1 and 1/2 winds around each of the post instead of three. I bought a new set of strings and installed them, this fixed the B string and the dead spots. The bass sounds and sustains fantastically now.

My Stingray was ordered from factory stock, shipped to the retailer who slapped a new label on the box and shipped it to me, so the strings were installed at the factory. It looks to me like whoever installed the strings at the factory was rushed, didn't cut the strings to the right length and twisted them while installing. I found this odd considering the quality and attention to detail that goes into these instruments. My new Stingray is absolutely flawless in every other way. By far the best instrument I have ever played or owned.

I'm still a very happy (more like overjoyed!) and satisfied customer, just a little confused as to why the the same attention to quality wasn't applied to the strings.

Bottom line noely73: Change the strings.
