Has anyone ever tried putting a sustainer pickup in their guitar. I was thinking about getting one for my JP6. But I know with the JP6's complicated electronics and piezo system would it be more headaches than its worth.

I have not installed one in a JP6, but I have seen the Fernandes kits (we are dealers). The installation is more than a bit intrusive - you need to route a cavity about 3.5"x3.5"x.75" deep to install the circuit board, plus route a spot for the battery.

I think it is worth a shot if you don't mind the routing! You already have a battery cavity for the piezo, and can use that as your power source.

I would definitely look into Sustainiac instead of Fernandes. Not that Fernandes doesn't do it well, its just I feel Sustainiac is worth the hassle. You don't even have to have the extra switches to turn it on and to change the modes. They have it as push pull pots for your existing controls. That and after you evaluate which model is for you, you can buy it and send it in to them and they will install it. I have not personally purchased anything from Sustainiac but I have from Fernandes and it is a pain in the ass and they have a lot of complaints about how well it works.
I think if you were to do any major work in a guitar like the JP, then Sustainiac seems to be better since you don't have to route nearly as much or if you have enough room for the push pull pots, then you won't have to route at all I believe.
As far as sharing the battery with the piezo, I don't know, but then you'd need routing.
Anyhow, good luck with whatever choice you make.

I'm think that some guy on here from California may have one in the neck position in his red Luke, but I'm not sure. I hear he has a band that's pretty good. :D

I've been toying with the idea of getting a sustainer pickup some day.

Ah you must mean Luke. He has called the Fernandes sustainer pickup a kind of one trick pony.

Good luck with your discussion. Glenn |B)
