Not so sure about the 350x, but the old 350 is a good solid head--I use it for rehersals and smaller gigs. I'm not sure what your teacher is offering you--I got mine for about $340 on ebay. I've seem them go for lower. That's a steal for a hand-made piece of electronics.

I remember back in the day when the 350 was one of the best amps you could buy.

SWR works for some amazingly. Some of us can't get them to do anything. I am one that can't find anything I like about SWR. May work for you.

Plug it in and listen before you buy it.

Dude I know bought a brand new SWR 350 and it crapped on him in the middle of a gig. He hates SWR now. I think it's a defecetive unit, but thought I'd chime in. On a side not, I just hosted a Norm Stockton clinic and he played through a GK 1001rb paired with a GK NEO 212 cab and I was BLOWN AWAY. You have to hear to believe. $1300 or so street price....light, and loud. Great tone, tracked the "B" like nobody's business.

I'll second the thumbs up on the GK rig.I play through the same rig except that I have two Neo 2x12's. For the price, volume and weight I think it's the best thing out there..........

I love SWR (for sound) and like everything else it is a matter of taste. However, the 350, to me, is underpowered. If I were to buy an SWR new or used I would at least get 750 (you actually can fing some 500s that are just as cheap as the 350s). I have had much better luck with the older lines (pre - fend) and I have heard some pretty good tales of the x-lines crapping out (specifically the 350x). If you like it and it has a good history grab it. Ask is this how I want to sound? Does it fit my needs (power, sonics, features) now and in the near future? Just don't fixate on the price (crap sold cheap is still crap).

I had a new, 2000 SWR SM-900 that up and died on me. I never did like the thing. It got Ebayed.

Stay away from Hartke, IMHO. The electronics guru/repairman I use says they have the worst solders in the business.
