Octavarium is a killer album though less metal than other DT efforts. This one is pretty good. I can do without the distorted vocals and I would have like the vocal melodies to be better in spots, but it kicks arse on the whole. Ministry is my fave so far. Makes me want the BFR all the more.

It looks like Dave LaRue popped by the studio. At least, I think that's Dave LaRue in the part where JP says JR's part sounds "Pac-Man-y." That's in the ITPOE part.

I def. have to agree with everyone that says this album hands down smokes Octavarium. JP's tone is awesome, and JM's bass sound is great too. MP's drumming is incredible. JLB's voice is amazing on this album I think, and JR's keyboard solos are insane like always. The documentary was great. One of my fav. parts is during the dark eternal night when JM yells wait and falls off the chair. That had me cracking up. Songwise, the most rockin one I think is Constant Motion, the call and answer vocals are so kick ass. My other current favs are In The Presence of Enemies Part I, cuz its pretty groovin and then The Ministry of Lost Souls is amazing. I think its an excellent album and I can't wait to see them twice in August.

All Dream Theatre is great does not matter if they slow it down speed it up or play dark, just great playing and song composition, I am only three songs into the new CD and love it

The new CD totally rocks! The DVD is cool too. I like learning inside info about the writing/recording process. A few of the solos are real stand outs, and the harmonys with Jordan are incredible. The new Rush Snakes & Arrows SE will be released later this month. Going to pick that one up too.

I liked the album very much. In my opinion they are rising their quality in their latest albums. I must also say that I find the album to be too short. I know know it is not (almost 70 mins), maybe it's that I need more!!

Actually, it is more than 78 minutes ....
The Special Edition (CD + DVD) is great. The price is very low for such a big amount of music.
Perhaps their best album (better than Metropolis ?).
The guitar sound JP has is really great. The clean sound on The Minsitry of Lost Souls is absolutely killer.

The DVD is spectacular, it's like they put as much time into it as the album. My favorite part is the Rock, Suck and Gay channels on the SSL, I lost my breath for a few minutes after that one. And Myung actually does something funny, it's awesome, kinda like the band has gotten more comfortable with the new label, new gear, new sound.
As for the album, Awake meets Rush. Some of the keyboarding was created on the same keyboard used for Tom Sawyer, and I definitely heard that on the first track, it hit me immediately. My favorite so far would probably be TDEN, but I dont know how much I dig the verses with Portnoy and Labrie singing in unison, but it may grow on me. JP's solo in Repentance is beautiful, he shines on this album.

The album KICKS ASS! Feels like a very diverse, great flowing album, which represnts DT very good on all aspects.
The SE DVD is awesome too, I had a blast watching the documentry, and I'm hoping to get to listen to 5.1 version soon, when my parants decide to get out of here and I can blast the speakers.
TDEN is my fave, no doubt. To listen to and to play.

So in other words you honestly think that was one take only....you do know that he composes his solos right?
And practices them to get the to pop on the track...personally I like the composed route since you can get it to sound tight.
Aisde from that bit, I wish they cam'd him when he was tracking TDEN's solo...his playing is hot fire on this record tho', and the footage of tracking and jamming is awesome. So many cool layers and things hidden in there...
This is my favorite DT record since 6DoIT....
Ern, I think we're both looking at it from a different take here...for instance, when I think one take, I think go in blow on the track and not hack it up or punch in/out to fix stuff...and not compose. But I digress as i mentioned above composing and getting it right usually works best for me, it doesn't sound as off the cuff but it sounds better...
...I definitely agree about him getting better with every record....it's nutty actually but touring cycles will do that to you...especially if you're out on the road kick'n booty for so long...i think the break actually helped them this time around too....this album has some definite fire to it...
