Ah – GAS attack. You know, Gear Acquisition Syndrome. A disorder that afflicts musicians into buying far more tools than required by the trade.

So, I am telling myself that I really don’t need to buy the Bongo bass I saw in the metallic Electric Blue. You see, I just got this F150 and it looks to be an exact match. I mean – I already have a Desert Gold 5 HH. How different could a blue one sound? Well – it is an HS – but will that really give me anything new in tones? And I need another bass like a hole in the head.

I could hang the bass in the back window like a gun rack between gigs…

Someone – ANYONE – talk me out of this! I keep going to the website and looking at that bass. Hmm - out of print - should I hurry>

Argh!

The easiest way to get rid of GAS is to just buy it..

remember, you can always sell it later when you need money (but ofcourse that's never gonna happen, it can't!

I think you came to the wrong place to talk you out of your severe GAS. I am going with it matches your truck there for you must buy it. As far as sound, it is a blue bass so you must play the blues on it, there is your excuse for getting it. JOSH

Your decision really depends on whether you view these things as tools or as beautiful works of art. They are both, of course, but it has to do with your bottom-line attitude towards them.

I owned four Bongos for about six months. I use three of them regularly. The other one was a rare case queen... and it bugged the heck out of me that I didn't use it enough. So as lovely as it was, it got sold last week. I bought it in a moment of weakness because of its rarity and beauty.

If you're not clear about this, then buy it... you'll figure out pretty quickly if it was the right decision or not.

In a rare moment of lucidity I must ask this. How much will the single coil sound different than the humbucker? I can think of two things where it might.

One - the nature of the pup. I have basses with series parallel switches and I do notice a difference.

Second. I noticed with the HH - when I pan all the way to the neck pup it loses some of its balls (no pun intended). I think it has to do with the circuitry that balances the volume of the pickups when you pan. Since the neck position would normally be a lot louder it must have been dialed back. Maybe the S would suffer from that less?

Sadly - there are no stores that carry Bongos in the Central PA area where I can try it out........

so you got rid of the rare case queen work of art... do I sense a Big Al 5'er in your near future? :D

The HS and HH Bongo sound very different indeed. I really couldn't believe it, how different they are. The HS has a beautiful snap and brightness, but also a nice kin of woody tone...but still ALL BONGO.

I like both, and I use both as much as each other. You definitely need an HS Bongo.

Maybe. Or maybe not.

Then again, I tend to do everything Jack tells me to do, so....

No order has been placed at this time.

If my wife were a visitor here I would observe - just in passing, mind - that next year is our 25th wedding anniversary....

The only way I'd try to talk someone out of a Bongo would be by trying to buy it from 'em. Anything else would be cognitive dissonance.

A new reason to buy a bass. I love it! I should have bought the black and maple classic 5 I saw yesterday. It matches my road king.

:D :D :D
