I'm a duncan guy...but I'm curious to see what people have to say about the stock pups in the JP ebmm...

there's like no specs available for these things...

are there pups that someone could compare them to? I know it's highly subjective in nature, but I'll take any info I could get =D

fyi, I'm partial to the duncan JB trembucker...dunno how it would compare to that insofar as output and eq curve and whatnot..

thanks guys

I don't own one, but if you have JB duncan it will differ much from JPs pups, and you will have to tweak EQ in the amp a little

From DiMarzio website:

Do you sell the "John Petrucci" pickups that are on the MusicMan guitar?
These pickups are only available as original equipment on John's MusicMan guitar. The 6-string neck model is very similar to the Air Norton™. The sound of the bridge pickup resembles the Steve's Special™, although it is not as close. The 7-string Air Norton™ is fairly close to the MusicMan neck pickup, and the Blaze™ bridge model is the closest-sounding available bridge pickup.

If you go to www.dimarzio.com and find the specs for abovementioned pickups, you'll have some data to compare to Duncans.

Most people around here like stock JP pickups it seems. There was a thread a while back about pickup changes, and only a few people said that they've changed pickups on their JP.

hmm..thanks for the info...I like the scooped mids on the steves special...I played through one on an ibanez jp model and its ounded pretty good.....I don't wanna have to get into getting a new pup unless I absolutely have to..and even though I'm normally a ducan guy, that doesn't mean I wont' like the stock jpmm pups..

thanks!

I like the JP pickups more every time I play. At first, I wasn't too enamored with them (but I wasn't intending to change them). After I tweaked out my amp to work optimally with them, I'm really digging them. I just realized that on Saturday whilst jamming.

the first time i played a pet through an amp on stage was slo fri. night during my ebmm guitar orgy. i found the pickups VERY natural, open , clear, tight , exceptionally responsive , w/ perfect gain and balance.

or.....in a word....STUNNING !!!!!!

whammy system is easily the finiest in the world.........(to me)

I actually like the EBMM JP pickups.

It's the only ones I haven't changed from stock out of all my guitars. For reference, two of my other favorite pickups are Duncan's: the JB and the Jazz. :)

I was on the fence a bit about changing them, but I've decided to keep'em. They are really similar to the Dimarzio Air Norton and Steve's Special. They sound kind of like them, but with a bit more bite and clarity.

I really like the JP pickups. They aren't going to have the same gain that your used to with the JB, and the tone will be different. I think the JP will probably end up sounding a little warmer and more "airy" due to the slightly lower output.

One I thing I recently did was raise the pole pieces on the bridge pickup (since the pickups are not adjustable). I raised them pretty high (all flush), about to where I would have raised the pickup itself if I could have. It's an easy mod, and just as easy to put back the way it was if you don't like the way it looks (it does look a little wierd).

But this really opened up the guitar, in my opinion, and added in some highs that I didn't hear previously. It also improved the gain/sustain considerably.

Something to think about.

BTW, Alder and Basswood have very similar tonal characteristics. Chances are if you like something in one, you'll like it in the other. ;)

I'm also pretty partial to the JB =D I have that and a jazz in my axis..and I have a jb in my lynch as well..

if you dig those and u like the jp pups then I may dig them =)

hey, as long as they sound good in the guitar, I'm not gonna go crazy..lol..I swapped out the axis pups cause I wasn't too crazy about them...

it's not that I don't like dimarzios...I'm just used to the ducans and I really like the JB alot..

but, we'll see tomorrow =)

Ryan

see, I like a hot pup..but I don't like an overly hot pup (like the duncan distortion..TOO hot!!! and too nasally..way high on the mids)

now, the steve's special is supposed to be hot..I checked the site..and the jp is supposed to be similar to that...also, alotta reivews I've read say that it's a 'metal guitar' which leads me to beleive that it's a bitey pup..

as I said, the proof is in the pudding..I'll jam on it for awhile before I decide to do anything...if I decide to swap them, I can just sell the jp's...someone's always willing to buy a set of pups, even stocks...I unloaded my axis pups on here pretty easily....

and since I dig the JB in my lynch, I'd probably like it in the JP as well..

but I'll give a review after some play time..and I know about the pole peice trick..did that with my axis stock pups..lol...the things you learn when you lurk ;)

i find the bridge pickup can have a bit of thwack on your rhythym tone if you dont have enough gain

otherwise these babys sing
so well
and the switching is seamless and made in heaven
