thwack....you mean, honky? twangy?

i mean when i am using the overdrive channel on my amp
(cos my amp is a marshall valvestate)
im not getting much gain

my esp ltd h202 had more gain

the pet still has alot of gain but what i mean by thwack is i can hear like the clean going gritty sound even on the bridge pickup with full gain

but when i use my pedal
it is blissfull
you can get palm muted chunk till the cows come home
and harmonics from places i have never seen on any other guitar

i only say thwack cos of my amp distortion

you will be sweet with your amp

It's funny, when I was awaiting the arrival of my Pet, I had the same concern. I even discussed it with Pete, briefly. I knew the neck pickup would be sweet. I have the Air Norton in my Ibanez, and I worship that pickup. I have always loved Petrucci's choices for neck pickups. My uncertainty lied with the Bridge Pickup. I wasn't sure if it was going to be what I was looking for, or if I was going to have to slap a Tone Zone in that puppy. Much to my surprise, the stock bridge pickup in the Pet met and exceeded my expectations. Chunky and well-defined lows, with the perfect balance of highs without going overboard (i.e. DiMarzio Evolution). Yes, you will have to tweak your amp settings, but the tones are there to be had. Not to mention that, harmonics are effortless. And rarely will you ever miss the feedback sweet spot. And that is without even getting into how amzing the cleans are. I love these pickups. Yeah, I still wonder what it would sound like with a Tone Zone, and one day I may experiment and try it out. But, it is not a priority.

cool, those are all things that are important to me..good harmonics, nice tight low ends...I don't like it to have a midrange honk or be like an ice pick...I like notes to jump off the neck when doing hammer ons and pull offs...so in a few hours I'll know =D

What is a "scooped mid" ?

when the midrange frequencies are lower when compared to the high and low...it's like on a graphic eq...bass on the left, mids in the middle, highs on the right...

it would look like a V bass and highs up, mids down real low

You can also get the scooped mid sound from your amp. Real popular with metal guys. Slightly oversimplified and depending on the amp: you bascially turn the midrange down to zero or just slightly higher, while turning up treble and bass to taste.

Creates a certain chunky sound a la Metallica... while having a ton of midrange in your sound creates a tone similar to Tom Scholtz of Boston.

Pickups can also have these charactersitics, too, but it is slightly different. You can't adjust the frequencies! ;) So, depending on your tone wood and pickups your guitar will have a tendency to be trebly, midrangy, muddy, clear, heavy, etc. It all depends on the wood and pups. I like a midrange pickup as much as a scooped one. The ToneZone is one of my favorites and it has tons of mids. Likewise, I love the scooped Steve's Special as well.

It's good to have tonal variation in your collection. I never change my amp settings, preferring to let the guitar sound as it will with my preferred amp settings. I like the difference in tone from guitar to guitar vs. having all them sound too much alike.

Dimebag Darrel was a big fan of the scooped mid....even had a button on his siggy pedal that would instantly drop out the mids.....
