I just thought I would share a few pictures from some work I recently completed on my Reflex Game Changer bass. Her frets were in need of a leveling, but letting it go a little longer than I probably should have, I instead opted to do a complete refret. I went with a German-sourced stainless wire that I purchased a long time ago —the size is identical to Dunlop 6105. This stuff is odd in that there's enough ferrous material in the composition, such that you can pick it up with a magnet (the first fretwire I've ever dealt with having this property).
The pièce de ré·sis·tance... The height of the new wire required a new string nut, but rather than ordering a replacement compensated nut from EBMM, I decided to fabricate my own from a bone blank that matched the binding nicely. It makes me wonder if anybody has ever made their own compensated nut of a different material than installed at the factory. Has anyone heard of this being done before?
I'm very happy that my bass is once again ready for years of heavy service and just wanted to share.
