Unless I am remembering wrong, which happens, today would be Ernie Ball's birthday.

What other names come to mind so easily in the music instrument business? Leo Fender, sure, and then - who? I was just a kid, buying Slinkys like everyone else, and I knew Ernie's name long before I knew anything at all about Leo.

But not only an industry icon - he was the Even Bigger Poppa. To all my friends with the last name of Ball, I lift my coffee cup this morning and say, "Happy birthday, Ernie!"

I never met him, but I know his kids and his grandchildren (and his daughter-in-law) and I imagine he must have been one hell of a guy to have had a hand in making those people who they are today.

And tonight, I'll sit down with my guitar player to work on some tunes and I'll have my Ernie Ball Music Man bass in my hands.....and I'll make sure that the first martinis of the night are raised in his honor.

Hear, hear!

I just found out I'm subbing for a blues jam tonight (help me), but I will make sure there is a toast for Mr Ball this evening.

And, I'm going to force any bass players who want to sit in to play my Bongo. :D

Here's to Ernie! By all accounts a man of great character and integrity. Seems like he passed those qualities to his descendants.

Well, I'll definately be wearing an Ernie Ball T-shirt today in honor of a great man who did so much for us musicians. Here's to Ernie, and the entire Ball Family.

some of em......

Thanks Jack and all. Much has been said about losing a loved one and the shifting of gears that occurs. I think about him every day. It's kind of hard not to when your job is his name. Most times positive sometimes no so. Sometimes you force yourself to not dwell on it , but today it is important for me to celebrate his life as I have for the past 51 years.

I get to laugh and cry and hope he is happy
