Unless I am remembering wrong, which happens, today would be Ernie Ball's birthday.
What other names come to mind so easily in the music instrument business? Leo Fender, sure, and then - who? I was just a kid, buying Slinkys like everyone else, and I knew Ernie's name long before I knew anything at all about Leo.
But not only an industry icon - he was the Even Bigger Poppa. To all my friends with the last name of Ball, I lift my coffee cup this morning and say, "Happy birthday, Ernie!"
I never met him, but I know his kids and his grandchildren (and his daughter-in-law) and I imagine he must have been one hell of a guy to have had a hand in making those people who they are today.
And tonight, I'll sit down with my guitar player to work on some tunes and I'll have my Ernie Ball Music Man bass in my hands.....and I'll make sure that the first martinis of the night are raised in his honor.
