That metallica sound

How do I get the metallica sound happening? I think the Axe's I have would make half the equasion but what amp+pedals would I need?
 
I'd say a small transistor amp with a broken speaker for the authentic Kirk Hamster lead sound.;)

I can get pretty close with the Dual Rectifier amp models in my Roland Cube and also in my M-Audio Black Box. Close enough for what I do anyway - the bobcats and deer in my forest don't know the difference :D

Same here. Any decent high gain amp +/- a distortion pedal can nail the rhythm sound easily. His lead/wah tones are a little trickier.
 
OK - I'll bite - Why all the raggin on Metallica?

I love The first 5 or so albums and love that "Damage Inc." sound - Mesa Boogie all the way. I learned to play in the early-mid 1980's listening to that, Maiden, Priest, Zeppelin, etc.

I don't listen to them much now, but that's only because my musical tastes have changed (this morning I listened to Alison Krauss and Union Station on the way in to work), but I still love a good Metallica song once in a while.

James and Kirk are both good players and put on a frighteningly tight aggressive show.

Just a bit of fun really.

I like Metallica a lot, especially from Ride The Lightning through to the Black album. Great songs and great riffage.

I've seen 'em live a couple of times (Justice tour and another?) and thought they were fantastically tight on both occasions. I have never been a great fan of the KH lead guitar though. I've never liked his tone and his playing has never particularly inspired me.

But hats off to them all, if I'd ever been 1/100th as successful I'd be a happy (and relatively rich) man!:D

Yeah. I like Metallica too. I like some of the Reload stuff, but for the most part, the black album is the last thing that they did that I really liked. Master of Puppets is definitely my favorite Met album. Like Bungo, I've never really dug KH's leads or his tone. But, man, Hetfields rhythm tones once they actually paid attention to that kind of stuff were awesome. Their production early on isn't my favorite. I'd much rather listen to the Dream Theater recording of Master of Puppets (when it comes to sound) than the original.

:) Yes!! Alison Krauss is my favorite female singer. And by that I mean from say '96-'97 on. Her voice has matured, before it was a bit "girly", yeah? She's great singing everything. Check out the song "Molly Bàn" that she does with The Chieftans (it's posted on youtube), and the song from the "Cold Mountain"-movie she did with Sting.:)

As for Metallica, Kirk's wah-sound gives me volvulus and I think the guitar sounds on their records lacks warmth. Straight up, it's "absolute zero" for me, total standstill. So I'm not able to get into it. It's a shame cause Hetfield's a great heavy metal rhythm player. And they've come up with a couple of decent songs too. All ruined by sonics. "Justice"'s the obvious example. Uuurrrgghhh!! :mad:

So you want "That Metallica sound"? WHY??????
