Norm,
Are you enjoying the JP?
I didn't make this known to the forum but I had to send my (Rare Sparkly) Burnt Apple Petrucci back to the factory. I wanted to do this as just a blind customer. When the pet came up in the rotation to be played I noticed the first string fifth fret was buzzing. I looked and saw the stress crack. I wasn't suprised but I knew what would be involved. I called the 800 number and I think Dan answered the phone. I told him I took delivery of a petrucci model in May and today I noticed notes fretting out and 2 small cracks at the neck pocket. Dan asked, "what color is it?" When I told him Burnt Apple, he responded "I don't think we made any Petruccis in that color. What's the serial number?" After a brief conformation he said I should send it in and gave me a RMA# for it.
UPS got it there in two days and the next thing I knew, my man Jon emailed me to say it arrived and that a new body was ordered for it. I didn't tell him or anyone I was sending it in. He got the guitar and contacted me himself. That made me feel the love. He also asked if there was anything else I wanted on it. I told him the frets seemed a little higher on it compared to my Silos and I wanted the neck sealed. Jon responded with a resounding "Can Do Sir!" along with a comment on how the forumites were the coolest people.
The next day Jon told me 2 things.
1. You can't have the color changed to Blue Dawn. It's in "The Book" as Burnt Apple and it will stay Burnt Apple. You can change anything but "The Book.” Don't make me point at the book again.
This is cool 'cause I really think the BA pet really compliments my BD Silo really well. Damn! What a one two punch that is.
2. He started work on the neck and noticed a bow so he ordered a new neck as well.
I figure some things are out of my control so I just have to accept them.
The guitar came back to me last Wednesday and all I can say is DAMN! The finish on the body is flawless. If another guitar’s finish is messed up because glitter from mine got sprayed on theirs, I don't care. It was worth it. And the neck is just beautiful. So I tuned her up and let her rip. This was the second time I got to play an EBMM fresh from the factory and man, what a treat. Top that off with the master luthier (Jon, the awesome guitar fairy – in the nicest and most manly way possible) himself put this bad boy together. This guitar won't shut up. The sustain is non-stop, I left the room to make a sandwich, low-carb of course, and when I came back it was still screaming. The action is so low I can't breath hard on it while I am playing (uh huh huh… I said hard on). I thought something was wrong when two-handed tapping pieces didn't sound right. I just needed to tap lighter. As that is my style, it worked out great. The fret finishing is something I don't appreciate until I feel a good one.
Most of all, I felt fantastic because of the attention and communication provided by jonguitarz. (kissey kissey noise)
This is the nicest guitar I have ever played
You guys are the reason I own 8 of your guitars and will never play any other brand of guitar.
Cons:
New strings take a little while to stretch out.
The nut is a little sticky but I feel confident that my secret recipe nut slick (uh huh huh) will cure that.
This guitar sounds incredible.
