Let's have a built in headphone amp so that the in ear monitoring guys can plug into the bass direct. Maybe an AUX in on the guitar as well if you need to hear other signals.

A ding resistant material or coating would be nice.

I just don't see what they CAN do to advance a bass without creating an actual new instrument

BP threw one out there. Software bass switching (click here for Sterling in series, click there for Sterling in parallel), instant tone recall (click here for hi fi, click there for vintage). In effect, combining high technology with old school features. That would still be a bass but it will say "Intel inside" or something.

What about the scuff proof finish. Glocks have this strong finish that is pretty much bomb proof. Mebbe such a polymer coat can be adapted for the bass. Say goodbye to buckle rash.

Nanotech motors that tune the bass between songs? The same motors to keep the neck relieved to whatever the player has preset?

On the subject of nanotechnology, there's been development of nanogenerators from Georgia Tech. Essentially they're really really small piezoelectric fibers that generate electricity upon the slightest vibration. Fit that in a guitar and you've got a power source, eh?

I saw this the other day. It's not a bass, but it looks like F****r is playing with a modelling Strat. If it's successful, I would imagine that a bass might not be too far behind.
