I tried searching the threads for this but didn't have any luck, just curious when EBMM started using and stopped using the matte pickguards? That musicman.org site has crazy detailed info on seemingly every other detail as far as changes made along the way but was just curious about this one. Cheers.

both my '95 fretless and my '00 fretted SR4s sport a matte PG.
that being said I bought them used so these could be retrofits.

I've had matte black guards on my 90-96 models but haven't had them on any of my Rays after that. I prefer the matte and have been thinking of taking '0000' steel wool to the shiny guards.

I have one on my 98 Stingray and 99 Sterling. You can still order one through Chandler Guitars/Pickguard Heaven/www.pickguards.us (all the same place).

My 93 SR4 fretless has a matte pickguard (white) - came as new with it (plus black screws!).

My son has a 2004 lefty SR4 - which had a matte white pickguard also (he's since put a standard shiny black one on it). Maybe the leftys had matte pgs after they were discontinued on the standard basses, to use up stock?
