hi

you may not know that i am a HOBBY bass player

it is my fav,!!!!
I love swithching instuments at a jam or rehersal, i always will go to the BASS

it is important for us to understand the FUNCTION of all the instruments
in the RHYTHM section

I wanted to clarify the Point about Note Duration

lets take an example of "DAZED AND CONFUSED "
by the mighty
ZEPPLIN

if that bass line was played by "disconnecting " the notes played short or staccato
it would have such a different "feel " for the song.

so the way we know it and hear it and approach it is SOOO
IMPORTANT to the overall groove and feel of the song

another example would be

LOW DOWN by boz

if that line was played "LEGATO"
OR HOLDING on to each note for TOO LONG
it would change DRASTICALLY it would not have the cool funky driving feel that
makes it work
( notice that the KEYBOARD PART is playing WHOLE NOTES ,
LONG TONES

the point im getting to is that you BASS PLAYERS
must be awared of the

PERCUSSION aspect of your instrument,

so apptley named is the BONGO BASS!!!!

am i getting thru?/

anyway

all these thought s came to me as i was driving home listening to the
KINGS VS DUCKS game live from LONDON england
THANX

John,
First of all let me say that you are one SICK drummer (and I mean that in a good way!)...EVERYONE that mentioned your name said that they were STUNNED at your virtousity. You added SO much to the respective bands...not because you were trying to prove how many notes you can fit into a bar, but because you can intuitively "feel" what is about to happen. (it's not the notes,...but the notes BETWEEN the notes) Also, what you added to the clinic was PRICELESS.
As a drummer/bass player I realize the importantce of S P A C E (or lack thereof) left by other band members. Too often musicians, who may be trying to justify there existance by demonstrating their mastery of their respective instruments, leave NO space for others in the same frequency... hopefully, (to those reading), as we mature musically we all realize the importance of the SONG over the technical ability of playing it. John, you did a GREAT job at the clinic...(next time talk even more) Good luck at promise keepers next week, and we'll talk to you next year (or hopefully sooner) -Capt. Don
PS. PM me if you need SWA passes -Don

Bp, Great format. Although I wasn't able to catch a lot of it (Unfortunatley dosing from sleep depravation,) it was cool interaction between the different "instruments".

The next one: a "debate"!! Where guitar players and bass players can go at each other a little and express there intermost feelings, (eg., I'm tired of you guitar players wasting so much time tuning; oh yeah, we're tired of you bass players turning it up louder than us and getting away with it). LOL

Great job BP, it was really good!!

hey buddy can you lend me a wfo

Diming a control is turning it up full. Dunno where the term comes from.

being from ancient times, many amps used to be built with rotarycontrols with a range from 1 lowest to 10 highest ... since a dime was 10 cents it became common to refer to something turned all theway up to 10 as being "dimed".

of course I stand to becorrected by any wikipedia wizzez:)

and BIG Tnx for the vibes all weekend and I'll be lookin' forward to the clinic video ...

meanwhile , I thought I was doin' great 2 yrs ago recovering from a broken left hand and 2 main fingers;)but, dang, this CVA is something else ...:(

Thanx again and safe travels Y'zall

I thought it was going to be good. I'd seriously underestimated HOW good.

Some crazy horsepower on that stage. Each player's approach was different; I especially loved it when one would give an opinion and the next guy would say, "Hmm, I never really thought of it like that..." and then go on to explain how his approach would differ. Great insights into how bassists work.

I was talking to Tony Levin outside and told him that I probably wouldn't have gone to see a show featuring five bassists and a drummer....he said, "You wouldn't catch me there, either." But that little vamp that they set up and riffed on might have changed my mind and Tony thought so, too.

Of course, when are you ever going to see those guys together again?

And John Ferarro makes everyone sound good. Even me! As bassists, it's easy to go on and on about Cliff or Tony or any of those guys, but let's face it - John is really and truly one of the treasures of the world, and I'm not blowing smoke.

When Dave M was talking about leaving space, playing fewer notes, I thought, "Yeah, especially when John's laying it down!"

(If we can't post the video somewhere, I hereby volunteer to transcribe it. That was too much information to let it just get away.)

And no, you can't ask for a better moderator than BP.

Fabulous. The whole weekend was just fabulous.

Most of it's been covered here, and I agree - the key thing for me was getting four simultaneous perspectives from pro bass players with varied approaches.

How about those Steve Morse translations, though!? ;)

Capt. Don, don't forget the piezo! :D

The clinic was FANTASTIC. My brain was just absorbing everything. I really took away a lot of information from everyone.

Big +1.

I don't know. I understood exactly what he was trying to say. Maybe, it's because I speak Guitarplayerese.

Yep - the clinic was great. I truly enjoyed being able to walk up and speak to all these pros when they were not on stage. Wonderful people - easy to talk to - and full of great information and stories. I enjoyed talking to Dave Marrotta and Cliff Hugo while playing golf. Super nice guys.

as great as the clinicians were what floored me the most was how they each made the same bass sound so distinct......the bongo is sick! If i ever get a bass it would be that one for sure.

The highlight for me was that jaco improv by LaRue, excellent stuff. Tony's dry humor was fantastic as well lol

Like everyone has said it was a fantastic clinic.

I really enjoyed hearing from all of them how they get treated like just the bass player. :)

Luke made me laugh on his take on the volume wars. :)

Rockin good clinic there BP. As was the whole weekend.

The in ear monitors question was very interesting also. They covered so much need to know things it is hard to remember it all in proper order.

Had a blast outside talking to Cliff and Tony. I don't know how you talked those two into doing a clinic BP.
