i got my dusty JP7 out and slapped a set of 011s in there (did tune down to Bb) and OMG the difference!!! i can't believe how much better the guitar responds to a thicker gauge!
I think any guitar is going to sound better with fresh strings regardless of gauge. My guess is if it was dusty - the strings on it were not so fresh, no?
I think gauge can make a tonal difference. Not sure that difference is as great as old vs. new strings though. I'm sure someone else probably does, however, and will hopefully chime in!
yeah, new strings are smashing, but i'm used to set neck guitars with hard tails, and to me, JPs aren't the most resonant guitars out there. They do have their own thing going on where raw sounds are concerned, but i like a bit more chunk (i actually stole this tuning from Jeff Loomis, though i have a higher gauge instead of the extra inch in scale. Tuned to B, it was a bit to tinny and too tight).
Can't wait to take her out back in get the TV50 cranked
