Hang in and, as mentioned, your fingers will figure it out.

I lost the tips of the first two fingers on my right hand to a lawn mower at age 14. Although I still have nails, one was sewn up partially on the the side and the other was grafted with a piece of my butt. Needless to say, I am not a great finger picker, but when I fake it I'm pretty good with my third finger and pinky. Being right handed, I also do everyday tasks slightly differently than others might with more use of the first two fingers, but to me it is now natural to use the third finger for many tasks.

I know the fret hand is a different issue, but again, the human body (and mind) is great at adapting and using what it has as opposed to what it is missing. (Losing an eye to cancer 18 years ago is whole different adaptation story ;))

Take care, and from experience, it will work itself out.

Michael

Sorry to hear about your injury.

The posts regarding how the human body can adapt to anything are entirely correct. Another tip would be to experiment with different playing positions.

I wish you a speedy recovery

Good luck and best wishes on your recovery. It will probably take some time, but I'm sure you'll be playing again soon.

Wow you guys never cease to amaze me with your kind words of encouragement and good wishes, and I thank you all. The deed has finally been done and I am looking forward to whatever challenges lay ahead playing guitar again. I even got to watch the whole procedure. I guess this must qualify me as a true KNUCKLEHEAD LOL.

That is so rough and I'm so sorry to read that. I think you'll learn to manage over time. It won't be an easy road, but it could always be worse.

Hang in there.

Tony Iommi did pretty well with two fingers cut off. He only invented a new style of music and is considered one of the best rock guitarists ever, certainly *my* favorite. Take care my friend and keep your spirits up.

I just got my Albert out , thought I'd see if I could work out what angle I would be landing my stubby on the fretboard. I've come to the conclusion it won't affect things that much actually. Most of my fretting is done with the end knuckles extended anyway, probably because I have big hands, so i don't think it will cause too much problem once I've got used to it. I managed to get down and funky to a bit of Tower of Power by adapting the other three fingers into ninths, majors, minors, minor sevenths, can't manage a major seventh yet lol. I am feeling pretty chuffed and if I'm honest it brought a bit of a tear to the eye. I am definately not going to push my luck and start practicing too early but man it was great to be able to play something again :D

Good to hear you're at it! Take care of that finger and get back to playing when the time is right. Maybe write a little something about the experience?

I don't think I could have watched the procedure. You've got some cajones to do that! I wish all the best.

Kev,

I was very sorry to read that you had more complications with your finger. But I'm glad the surgery went well. Don't worry. You'll overcome this hurdle and be playing with your Balls again in no time.

I'm amazed at what John Denner can do. And don't forget Tony Iommi lost the tips of his two middle fingers on his fretting hand and I think he did just fine.;) You'll be fine too.:)

Best wishes and quick recovery man. All I can say for some advice with being able to play that way would be to just accept it for what it is (which is obviously difficult) and practice as much as you can with it to just get past the acceptance part and by then you will be able to have your own style of playing. Who knows maybe you could discover things you haven't yet already on the guitar. Keep your head up, you'll get through it.

Best of luck to you.

Hey Purple, I applaud your positive attitude. If that happened to me, I would have probably sold all my guitars by now. I think from what you have written already that you are determined to not only adapt to this setback, but come out of it playing better than ever. I truly wish you the best.

Thanks. I think if I were a bedroom player only I may possibly have been inclined to do the same, however, since I was 16 my whole social life has revolved around my music. I love playing live with my band, they are all a fantastic bunch of guys, we have so much fun and I would miss it terribly. We have gigs booked up all year and many already in for next year so. So the thought of not having that is unthinkable, I am just truly thankful that I was not more severely damaged, it could so easily have been a different story. Of course all the messages of support from you guys has given so much encouragement and inspiration and I am so grateful.
