Tonight I will be performing with a 60 piece orchestra, with the L.A. Gospel Choir, Dancers, and Singers at UCLA's Royce Hall to celebrate the music of Irish composers.
I (thought ) I was hired to be the Rock Guy doing the U2 songs while the 5 dbl. basses handled all the orchestral music.
I arrived at the rehearsal early and found a surprise in my stack of music. There was a piece from the Lord Of The Dance that the arranger decided should be on electric bass.
There was a sea of black notes but what really threw me was that it was written in 2/2 time signature.I have been doing this for a long time but have never seen an entire piece written in 2/2. The orchestral guys see this stuff all the time.Even drummer Alex Acuna was confused as well.I had 15 minutes to figure this out and really came into a mental block. The figures are played twice as fast as they look and I just thought I was gonna get my ass handed to me. Fortunately , I was not the only one that thought that this would have been much easier in 4/4. There were many run throughs and I finally got it without drawing attention to my numerous mistakes.
Point of story: ALWAYS GET TO GIG EARLY. In this town , you never know what will be handed to you.

Point of interest: the 2/2 time signature is often associated to the playing of "reels" in traditional gaelic music, be it Scottish or Irish. Lots of the dancing in Riverdance or Lord of the Dance is done to reel time. I see this quite often in my other hobby of competitive pipe band drumming. Great story!

Yeah reel 2/2 is a killer I have played in trad sessions before and they always stick a few of them in.

Sounds like a great show was it recorded ?

Being early is one of my good habits, but i have plenty of bad ones too;-) !!

Oh Yes!

Few gigs ago we were a bit late... Rushing to set-up, we inadvertently had two mics "swapped" into each others inputs which somehow wasn't apparent during our (rushed) sound check but all to obvious during our opening song!

Being early is definitely the way to go!

Can't read music, so even having been early wouldn't have helped me...

Playing with Alex Acuna is an experience we all should have. Doesn't matter what type of music he's playing....It all feels great. And ...a very nice human being to boot.
