Tonight I will be performing with a 60 piece orchestra, with the L.A. Gospel Choir, Dancers, and Singers at UCLA's Royce Hall to celebrate the music of Irish composers.
I (thought ) I was hired to be the Rock Guy doing the U2 songs while the 5 dbl. basses handled all the orchestral music.
I arrived at the rehearsal early and found a surprise in my stack of music. There was a piece from the Lord Of The Dance that the arranger decided should be on electric bass.
There was a sea of black notes but what really threw me was that it was written in 2/2 time signature.I have been doing this for a long time but have never seen an entire piece written in 2/2. The orchestral guys see this stuff all the time.Even drummer Alex Acuna was confused as well.I had 15 minutes to figure this out and really came into a mental block. The figures are played twice as fast as they look and I just thought I was gonna get my ass handed to me. Fortunately , I was not the only one that thought that this would have been much easier in 4/4. There were many run throughs and I finally got it without drawing attention to my numerous mistakes.
Point of story: ALWAYS GET TO GIG EARLY. In this town , you never know what will be handed to you.
