There is plenty of beer in China that is better than Bud, Chuck. Tsingtao/Qingdao is a nice German style lager, and probably the only brand of local beer you'll find all over the country. Just about every province and large city has it's own brewery, so there are tons of different brands of beer. Most are decent, some are horrible, but on average they're all better than Bud/Coors etc. Zhujiang (Pearl River) from Guandong province is another good one. Stay away from Beijing 5 Star, which you can buy on street corners for around $2 a six pack. It's a shocker.

This is a great opportunity to visit the fastest moving economy in the world, and with Beijing prepping for the Olympics next year there are going to be some fantastic things to see and do while you're there. Relax and enjoy, Chuck.

last tip....watch out for the Cab Drivers!!!!! I have stories!!! Have a great time!!

I took a cab in China and lived to tell about it!!

I'll put a ride on the scariest roller coaster in the U.S. up against a ride in the average cab in China....it's an experience all it's own!

I too was an unfortunate recipient and victim of the above atrocity. I don't know where IT came from, who sent IT or why but it's useful on occasion....

MySpace can be creepy at times.....

Ask yourself, "Why do we call food 'chow'?"

Then remember that Chihuahua is the other white meat.

I'll miss you.

And we'll see you in the desert, by God!

hang on you get to go to China and you are moaning about it

God love you, I wish I was going back there. Its one of the most amazing places in the world with a couture that goes back ......well more than 200 years

5 star hotel in china is a whole lot different than 5 star in the USA,you will be treated like a king !!

stay away from the Bud and the Mickey D's (you can get that muck at home if you want)...... try local food and drink the Tsing Tao beer its all good

If you go there with the " its going to be hell " state of mind you will come back and tell us how crap it was. It really is an amazing place, its not perfect by a long shot but no where is.

And if I sound off.....its because I am. I can tell you a horror story about a cab ride in san Francisco or a near death ride in Italy.

Go there have a great time see the great wall, walk up it if you dare (just bring a spare shirt !!) go to the markets haggel!!! get up at 5am,go to a park, see the locals doing ballroom dancing (in full dress) or tai che and a whole lot more.

Thanks everyone, the tips, info and all the well wishes mean a lot to me. I hope to take some funny pictures and find my wardrobe for the bash in the desert. Most of my moaning and groaning is about the long flight, I’m sure I’ll have fun when we get there.

We are taking a computer with us so I hope to check in, but I’ve heard the internet is censored there. I bet the corporate web site of the finest American made guitars and basses will be red flagged. But I’m taking all my Ernie Ball shirts and hat and will wear them proudly as an unofficial ambassador of EBMM

…. unless the Chinese have seen my infamous picture, then I’ll probably wind up in a labor camp making Fen*ers !

Beiijing was a good time. I enjoyed it. Mark's spot on about the beer. I'd advise against the dried scorpions. It seemed like a better idea than it actually was.
