I was wondering if any of you fellow music lovers have heard of a band called the Mars Volta. My friend just told me about them and when I listened to them I thought they were awesome...if you know them tell me what you think.

Mars Volta is pretty cool I'm listenting to them now. Did You know that Flea from the peppers plays bass on the MarsVolta Album "Deloused in the Comatourium".
If you like them, listen to At the Drive In, they're way better. It's the singer and guitarist from Mars Volta. It's the first band they had. Listen to songs like Cosmonaut, Quaratined, Invalid Litter Dept. and One Armed Scissor.

I gotta disagree about At the Drive-In being better than the Mars Volta, though the Mars Volta is my absolute favorite band ever. I'm just not a fan of all the yelling, I guess. The Mars Volta is far weirder, too. 
I got their CD "deloused in the comatorium" about 5 or 6 months ago and I really like it alot. Flea's bass playing along with the other band members is exceptional. They ended up opening for A Perfect Circle when they came to Oklahoma. The Mars Volta let me down. I was expecting so much more. I still like the CD though. They just didn't perform live very well. APC on the other hand was amazing. Perfect performance and perfect sound as well. I was very impressed.
