Went to see these fellas at the Royal Albert Hall yesterday.
Basically, they recreate as accurately as possible Genesis shows from the early '70's. Up until now, The Aussie Pink Floyd were the best tribute band I had seen but that award has now definitely passed to The Musical Box.
They have gone to the trouble of finding original instruments from the era, recreated the stage sets, costumes, masks and sourced the original slides/projections etc from Genesis themselves.
The singer IS Gabriel. He not only replicates the singing perfectly, the stage moves, the between song stories and even the gestures are all copied precisely.
The drummer even, sings like Phil Collins for gawds sake!
Needless to say the band reproduce the sound of those early Genesis songs perfectly to my ears. Every vocal nuance of PGs is perfectly reproduced. The band themselves sound spot on. I can see now why people say that early Genesis albums never really captured the power of the band live. This mob were really powerful all through their set.
I was too young to see the real Genesis play these shows, but I am reliably informed that to see the Musical Box perform is absoutely as close as you can get.
The show they did yesterday was from the 'Selling England By The Pound' tour, and as such was about as perfect a Genesis set as you could get (IMHO).
Namely -
--------------------
Watcher Of The Skies
Dancing With The Moonlit Knight
I Know What I Like
The Cinema Show
More Fool Me (with 'Phil' singing!)
Firth Of Fifth
The Musical Box
The Battle Of Epping Forest (Fantastic!)
Supper's Ready
--------------------
The Knife
--------------------
Bloody marvellous! I'm just a bit worried that seeing the real thing this summer is going to be a bit of a let down in comparison!
