I have been playing bass on and off since 1983. I have only owned 8 basses so far. Let me say this before I list these other brands. None of them can hold a candle to an EBMM bass especially when it comes to tone. I was chasing this tone for years without realizing it.
It started with a Vantage, Hey, everybody has to start somewhere it had a maple neck and transblue finish. At least it looked cool and that was it. Since then I have owned Carvin, Schecter - USA,Fernandes -Japan, Tobias - USA(Gibson), and a couple of Ibanez's - Japan / Korea. Then last year I got real restless on bass. Bored with my tone I started trying all sorts of basses. Then I picked up a Stingray 4 one night and realized this was the tone I was after. The wife shot that one down. One month later I bought a SUB5. I will probably upgrade by the end of this year to another EBMM bass(SR5 or Bongo 5). Will I stop wanting -no. There are too many tonal textures in the low end to be explored. I currently own 3 basses, soon I will be down to 2. I hope I can find that go to bass, and all the others will fade away. My realistic goal is to have one 5 and one 4 EBMM bass and Acoustic bass guitar. Besides, with the groups I play in and their extensive use of Mr. Capo I just don't think I will ever be able to survive with 4s only.
