Gotta love Mangini, the man has been churning out some amazing stuff over a LOT of years. I went to one of his clinics years ago, and he was like playing a different time-signature with each limb, all at the same time and it became this out of phase/in phase piece of absolutely brilliant music. Like JP said, the guy does things with one limb that others can't with more at the same time. Seems like a cool guy and quite a joker (mean that in a GOOD way).
I'm stoked to see the rest, some monsters still to be auditioned. I know the feeling of playing with musicians of extreme caliber is always awe-inspiring and fun, and to get 7 of them must have been a treat even for the DT-guys
I really loved this first part of the documentary - Mangini simply rocks, doesn't he?
As for the documentary itself? Well, it checked all of my boxes: It was highly informative, respectful of the whole Portnoy scenario and just plain cool to watch. I wasn't thrilled with the trailer, but the documentary (this far) is the real deal!
Same here on the trailer...I was really worried after watching that, but episode 1 was great, would have liked to have seen more of the songs they played and the jam, but they can't give away too much!
I think it's cool how they did this and put it together. It's another great way for fans and everyone else to see the band at a deeper level and a nice way present a great new drummer to fill in the shoes of a monster player they have played with for 25 years. Cant wait to see the next episode.
Thanks for posting the vid. Although, we haven't seen the others yet, I think it's Mangini's job to lose. He's got killer skills, he knows the guys, he's worked on James' albums. I think he'd be a great fit.
This is better than any of the reality stuff on tv. I love it! I hope all seven of them get a bunch of recognition from this. I've already checked out all the guys on youtube.
I thought it was fantastic. I like the behind the scenes look at what was going on. I don't mind that they are drumming up publicity (sorry about the pun) via this route. They've always documented everything, why not this? It is interesting, and we will know when they are ready to announce the choice, and these vids give us some insight into how the choice was made. I think it's cool. I hope Mangini gets it; he seems like a great guy from what everybody says, and a smoking drummer.
Mr Sticky posted it couple of posts above haha. This was awesome! The thing is that its still hard for the viewers to see the entire chemistry throughout the 3 phases...but you can still see who gets along better in general. Definitely Mangini and Minneman are the top two from what I saw, but I also think Donati is awesome!
