You guys are not gonna belive this! And yes pics are coming!

As I said before in some threads, I was gonna mod my EBMM Luke guitars to fit a tone control and passive pickups. The humbuckers already fit due to earlier mods. I got recommended a guy in Malmö in Sweden, the third biggest town in Sweden. I didn't use my reguler tech on this one, because his milling machine to do the job was broken, so I used this other guy instead, who was suppose to be very good ( turned out to be the other way around ).

I left my guitars last week, and picked them up today. I nearly threw up when I saw the guitars! I don't have pics right now, but I will post some.

The guy hade used a hand-milling machine to do the single coil routing, it looked like he has used a knife to do it! He had also damaged the finish down to the wood on top of the guitar. On the back, he had to start over the milling process ( probably used a more proffesional milling machine than a hand one now though), because he went to deep and to far out the ledge several times. Everything was crooked, uneven and very bad! The worse thing that he took to much at the ledge that the lid is suppose to rest one, so he had glue a piece of wood the the side of the cavity to fasten the screw to something ( which doesn't work at all btw ). Even the lid that he did doesnt even fit the hole! Also, the edge that goes from the finish of the guitar down to the ledge that the backplate rests on is 90 degres sharp, no rounding what so ever!

He wanted alot of money for the job even when it was so poorly done. I walked out of the workshop to get some money, but on the way back from the ATM I got mad, called a friend of mine who works in a music store and has 20+ Music Man guitars and explained how they looked like and asked for advice. I walked back to the shop, told him that he ain't getting any money for this sorry ass job and that he will hear from me regarding compensation. He then told me that is was a poor job and told me to leave. I then went home and showed the guitars to my ordinary tech guy and my friend in the music shop. Both agreed that the guitars where ruined and it was a total hack job.

So, now I have to 2 guitars I don't wanna use. How's the best way to go about getting him to compensate me? The tech guy and my friend said that the only right thing is for him to replace my guitars with Music Man guitars that are simular.

Thanks for listning, this whole thing is a bitch!

Call a lawyer to know exactly what are the rules in Sweden.
Or perhaps you can browse the NET.
Perhaps, you should make a "complain" (don't know the word in english) at the police station.
Normally, a shop has an insurance for this sort of "problem".
perhaps you should also contact your insurance (in Franec, when you have an insurance for your house, the objects in the house like a guitar are also protected by the insurance).

A lot of phone calls ...
My best wishes, you will need a lot of patience

I will get pics.

It's not like they have been run over, but they look like **** and you can't really fix it. I will probably sell them later.

Not sure what the laws in Sweden are...but, he should replace them with MUSICMAN guitars, not similar.

That is like replacing my JP's with an OLP. It is similar, but not the same.

You should get a lawyer. Tell him the story. He'll probably make one phone call to the "tech" to tell him what his options are: Replace the guitars and move on or, go to court and lose even more money and time.

I'm sure he'll come around. For what the lawyer will charge you, you'll still come out with two new guitars.

You say that you got recommended this "butcher" - who recommended him to you - your worst enemy ? In retrospect it would have been better to have had one done at a time.

I do feel sorry for you. I'd try what Tommy advised and contact CS.

Man lawers are super expensive in Sweden. I really hope that there is a way to get new guitars, but to be true, I don't think I will get **** from him. I have a bigger chance of going thru my insurance than sueing him.

I'm not a rich man, actually, I have debts from buying to much gear lately. I have job as a playing musician so I can pay of those debts, but there's no way I can afford 2 new Music Mans for a long time.

The guitars closest to what my guitars were gonne be with the new pickups is actually the Silhuette Special. The mod was for fitting passive pickups so getting new Luke IIs would just be stupid.

You could turn them into a very classy Maypole...

:D

Just kidding! Man, I would be soooooooooooo angry if that happened to me! Ugh!

So, there's no salvaging the guitars by maybe cleaning up the routing? It does sound pretty bad. Good luck getting some restitution, I hope it works out.

well I´m very sorry to hear this man. Post pictures so we can see how we can help anyway. Man this sucks.
Maybe you should have given him the guitars one by one, so only one would have suffered. But it was quite a longer drive to the guy if I understood you right?

So let´s see what your family can do for you.

Think about a custom pickguard to cover the damage.

Very sorry to hear about this, Flukather. I think what others have said about seeking legal council is a good idea.

There’s probably more hacks than actual luthiers and techs out there. I sold a guitar to a buddy to give to his kid. It was a knock off, which I had modified with pickups (actually from a EBMM SS), and I had worked the frets over carefully. It sounded and played really nicely. Later, my friend accidentally broke one of the tuners, and took it to a local “luthier”. The guy talked my friend into letting him shave the edges of the board (ala Fender’s “broken in feeling necks”) and “dressing” the frets. My friend agreed. Next time over to my friend’s house he handed it to me for my approval. The guy all but removed the frets to nothing, and there was a huge strip planed from the top and bottom of the entire finger board. What a hack job! Made me sorry I ever sold it to him.

Your deal of course is more serious, considering the sweet guitars this guy butchered. I sincerely hope you recover the loss. Also, thanks for sharing the tale; it might make others think about who they hand their guitars over to.
