I just bought a SUB 5 as my 1st ever bass. I've played guitar before but I have some questions since the last time I ever played a bass it was with a bow so I'm a bit bass retarded.

I know the 1st knob is volume but what are the other two?

Is the action a bit higher than the average electric guitar?

I got a great deal on this bass. I wanted to eventually get a bass but this was too good to pass up since Music Man gear is some of the finest that's out there.

Welcome!

Boost got it. 3EQ is only found on the Sterling for the SUB series. If your bass is passive, the treble and bass are cut only. For active versions, they are boost/cut without center détente.

Some people set the action on their basses real low, so I'm not sure how it compares to that of a guitar.

Oh yeah. I've heard only good about Music Man basses.

I originally wanted a MIM Fender fretless Jazz bass but they marked down the SUB5 and they threw in a case.

THis may be the only bass I ever own but at least it's a good one.

Welcome to the world of bass. You listened. Never look back you done fine on your way through the door.

Most basses are setup with the strings a little higher than the guitar. EB basses can stand to go lower that a lot of others. There is a faq page here at EB that is good reading for the new owner.

Try it with the strings up though until you get used to muting and generally learn the bass.

Stick around and enjoy this forum too. You will find a variety of opinions here on most everything except EB quality.

Hello and welcome,

I would recommend you start taking private lessons, if you can. I know where you stand, as I started out on the upright bass, as well. :)

The private lessons will help you with technique and get you acclamated to your new instrument. ;)

Thanks for the welcome. The action doesn't bother me at all.

What's the best way to mute the other strings when playing?

You know, that is a great question. We old bassists don't even think about that business - it's such a part of playing that we (I would think) never consider it.

You'll figure out your own methods, but for me, it's my fretting hand, mostly. I use parts of it somehow to keep unwanted strings from chiming in. I also notice that when I'm playing on the D or G strings, I tend to use my right hand as well.

I've actually never tried to explain it! This is hard.

I was thinking of using the thumb or 3rd finger from keeping the lower sound strings silent.

Is everyone forgetting the unspoken forum rule that a bass doesn't truly exist until there are pictures posted??? (kidding:D )
Anyway, welcome to the forum KK (and that is a very nice choice for a starter bass - trust me if you are like everyone else here you'll be experiencing G.A.S. [gear acquisition syndrome] very soon - so go ahead and start picking out your next EBMM product to dream about).

I use the thumb on my plucking hand to either rest on the lower strings or lean on them when I'm on the higher strings. I also use my fretting hand to lay my fingers slightly on the higher strings. Sometimes I ust the thumb on my fretting hand to mute the E string as well.

I eventually have to find my digital camera.

It was because of GAS I ended up with this bass.

Within 2 years I've gained

Fender Tele
OLP MM1 (Axis replica)
Washburn I64
PRS Santana SE
PRS Soap Bar II
(only 5 of 7)

Then came my 1st bass SUB 5-my only American made axe. I got this with a case for less than $600. They hid it in a spot I guess hoping no one would see it. I wanted a bass so I couldn't let this go. So my 1st bass is a real one.

I tend to desire instruments for their comfort and feel. This one is very friendly.

I know a guy who has the OLP version of this and he likes it.

I can play a guitar and distinguish what I like and don't like by the sound. I haven't gotten that far with judging basses.

Playing stringed instruments is a hobby. I'm brass and flute guy.

GAS just doesn't stop there. But if there is a Betty Ford Clinic for GAS. I need to check in. Last summer sales people at Sam Ash use to call me when they had a sale.

Guitar Center and Sam Ash, they all know me. It's like lions waiting for weak prey.

I wasn't forgettin'! I was just a little more polite about it. :p

And it is unspoken because it is overtyped. So... without further ado, Pics Please. No hurry, we just want to salivate for a little while. :D
