I understand the concept of the ramp, but I don't understand why you'd want to basically take away the ability to really dig in when warranted.

Ive played some basses with ramps and I can see why they appeal to certain people. Yes, being able to dig in at times is enjoyable, but if you arent that type of person, a ramp can really facilitate the playing process.

I bought a fancy $4K bass one time (for only $2.2K ;) ) and it had a ramp between the pickups.

That lasted about one day.... (it was stuck on with double-sided tape)

WTF? For basses with pickguards, there are a hundred different solid positions other than over the pickup. Willis is smoking his socks.

i pluck inbetween the pups on my bongo. i like having the room to maneuvre my fingers.

but, to each their own. if someone likes to use a ramp, good on them.

If you use the floating thumb technique you can play anywhere. Works for me

I've spent quite a while learning NOT to "dig in" and found that, for me, I get way more speed when I need it, and way more tone/sustain when I'm not hammering out 1/16th. Just a personal preference.

I am most definitely NOT a slapper! (Not that there's anything wrong with it)

There are plenty of advantages of ramps.

Although, i'm a guy that also likes to dig in so they'd probably limit me. Hope you find out what's best for you. :)

I've heard this case made and have to agree. I've heard about techniques involving sort of... 'Bouncing' the string off the ramp to keep the tension on it a bit higher... If that makes any sense. The comparison I got was to try playing right over the last salad frets of your neck, though for obvious reasons it works best on a fretless bass.

I don't know what salad frets are, and I've been around a long time, but I sure like the way it sounds.

"Salad frets."

Yeah. I like it.
