I don't know, I think I'm with Mark... It just sort of has a training wheels feel to it, despite how attractive it is :)

Why not cover the ramp with pickguard material?

It's a good idea, but I don't have a spare pickguard around. Also, the existing pickguard on a MM leaves little room for a ramp, so in order to epoxy (I guess?) a piece of pickguard to the radiused ramp, the ramp would have to be REALLY thin so the strings don't touch it, and I'm not skilled enough nor have the tools to make a ramp that thin with a proper radius. I may see about that through a luthier though- bassmonkee actually suggested the same thing to me several months back.

Hey, whatever wins the Tour de France ;) Guys like Gary Willis and Matt Garrison use them, and in cycling terms, they'd be up there with Lance Armstrong :D

Didnt know you got that bass Bryan, looks great :)

Thanks- I sort of messed up my hands this week putting in a patio and removing about a gallon of old caulk from my tub (cut my fingertips a couple of times and a few fingernails have that painful underbed exposed), so I haven't posted about getting it yet, as I like to include sound or video clips of a bass when I get it. Hopefully by next week my fingers will heal up enough to play decently.

musicman ramp

don't know if it has been mentioned yet but the bass player from the Spin Doctors plays a musicman bass with a sort of ramp. What actually did was get a really thick pickguard made that goes right up under the strings.... the whole pickguard.

I've played his bass and to me it it very strange to play. (also because he is left handed!)

but he playes the hell out of the bass. he actually has trouble playing basses without it.

That is one of my issues with ramps: because a person comes to rely on them, they limit what he/she can actually pick and just play. Why get used to such a contraption in the first place. I know that some players like Gary Willis use them, but so what. Its like Lee Trevino's golf swing. Sure it works great for him, but you wouldn't teach it to a kid... I hope :)

I hope that Gary Willis and Matt Garrison don't ever jump off of a bridge! :)

Who really cares what anyone else likes to feel or play? Not liking something is okay. Not liking anyone to do something you don't like isn't.

Of course this is just my opinion.

I was talking to both sides of the ramp deal.

Mr Cleaver likes flats and 5 strings.

Thanks and I am thinking yours is right smart too.

Bet they both bring all the player has to offer.

I think you're talking about the bass that Mark White is holding here in this pic with me. It has a thicker pickguard, but it has also had the neck pocket deepened so that the neck sets lower.

I would take lessons from Mark White any time I could.

That pic was taken at last summer's TB get together. He is a monster slapper, really good teacher (his first clinic) and one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. I wish he lived close enough for me to take lessons from.
