I don't know what you call this sound BUT this is one of the tones that I am looking for. I can't seem to dial it in with my SR5HH (new)

There are a ton of tones in that SR5HH.
I'm sure with the right strings, amp, eq, technique, switch setting, you can find something similar.
That ibanez sounds pretty dark and middy. Geddy's tone was a nasty jazz bass tone. I would try position 2.

I believe Geddy used his Jazz to record YYZ. So if you're looking for that sound exactly you will not find it in a MM or any other bass. If every bass sounded exactly the same, there would be no sense in making more than one model now would there? You can come very close with the MM though. It's just a question of dialing in the right tones and EQ on the bass and your amp.

The same goes for if you're looking for the exact sound that guy was getting on his 6 string Ibanez in the video. You can come close with some tweaking, but you'll never get it exactly.

look into a a bass emulator. some amps and processors have them. i personally don't like them. but it might be worth checking them out at your local sam ash or guitar center.(remember you can always return it if it sucks!) art night bass, bass pod (i forgot the company that makes it) and the korg company subsidary compay makes a amp that has emulators. and also try playing the bass through different amps. good luck!

Put your bridge PU in single coil mode and turn the mid know all the way up..
That's what I do with my Stingray 5H. Bass and Treble flat, Mid all the way up full and put the pu in single coil mode. Closet you'll get to a nice sounding Jazz Bass.
However, when I play in Series, I roll back the mid to about 25%-50%.

The bass the guy has in that video looks like he has Bartolini's and Preamp. Looks like an Ibanez so the PUs could be the Bartolini MK series which are Korean made.

Look at it this way, the tone is in your hands. And what Jaco said, "Strings Help Too"

I don't get this whole concept of trying to sound like another musician.

Some interesting information on Wikipedia under Bass Amplification for Geddy Lee. I knew he used to use a dual amp stereo rig, but I didn't know he sent a signal to each from different pick-ups.

Still.... I don't understand what sound jar546 is looking for: Geddy Lee's sound on the original YYZ recording, or the sound of the Ibanez bass from the player in the video?

Regarding the Geddy Lee sound: Different amps with different distortion levels are mixed with the D.I. signal (AFAIR). The easiest way to get at a similar sound (at home) is to use a good quality software based amp and speaker simluation (e.g. AmpliTube or GuitarRig) and drive a tube amp head into distortion. Also, as previously said, try the single coil modes and boost the mids on your bass a bit.

Regarding the Ibanez sound: I'm happy my Rays can't sound like this ;)

The OP has an SR5 HH, so setting #4 is going to be the closest thing to a J type, single coil and pickup spacing type sound as Geddy's old '72 J. The rest of the tone will be up to him.

I understand and agree with that. I just like the sound of the bass on that particular clip.

As far as what sound. Not necessarily Geddy's sound but the sound on that particular clip.

Thanks for all of the help and direction.

I saw Rush in concert just a week ago and it was a wonderful concert but I did not understand at all what he tried to achive soundwise. His jazz bass sounded dreadful. No definition and no low end. You could hardly hear it all thro the concert. Then he picked up his Rickenbacker and played it on one song and it sounded soo much better straight away. Warm bottom with definition. I don´t get it. That jazz sounds no good.

Everyone knows it's washer first then the dryer LOL.
He uses Avalon U5 and or the Grace Design LunaTec V3 a lot to the P.A a lot (for recording too).

Instant "Geddy-ish" tone on a budget. Buy a used (less expensive) GK RB-800 your fav 4x10 and 1x15. Keeep the mids tight ,click in the low shape button use the onboard boost at about 40% and rock out to your fav Rush tunes.
