Thoughts on my new ASS MM90

I've had my ASS MM90 for a month now- nearly- and I have to say- WOW!

The MM90s took some getting used to, after playing my Luke and Silo Spec, but I can't believe how I lived without this guitar before now. I get fat twangy sounds and out and out filth with these. Why don't more people own the MM90 version?!

And the important thing for me is the weight- its soooo very heavy compared to the other guitars I have owned in the past. It's heavy like I could hit someone with it and cause a head injury heavy- like my old 70s tele, which I got rid of years ago cuz it played like poop.

I now have my perfect Tele type guitar. Tele? What tele?!


PS- I know you lot live by the "No picture, no guitar" rule, but I'll get a pic up soon to prove it exists. You would not believe the top on this!

My nearest guess is this...........

If you've come from a Strat background and are used to singlecoils.....you flat out love the MM90's straight away.......

If you are accustomed to HB's.....the MM90's take some getting used to....like an "aquired taste". At first might seem a bit thin...a bit weak....

I find the MM90's to be the nastiest and tastiest little pickups around. Soooo much "bite and snarl" (to quote a fellow forumite).

Agree totally on the pickups.....but heavy???? what guitars have you been playing in the past?
My ASS mm90 is lots lighter than a PRS, a Strat and very definitely a Les Paul

I've had some featweight big name guitars- lots of em! All with the resonance and attack of a piece of Balsa wood.

This one is 9lb 2 oz! This is one heck of a lump of wood! So bright and middly. I guess I always go for the heavy guitars after my 70s tele experience- I think that one was made of depleted uranium or black hole or something. IMO i was lucky with this- I ordered without trying out.

As for the pickups I've always pretty much used a Hss setup on strat style guitar or a tele type setup. The MM90s are something else.


Here's an idea for a thread- how about we have a guitar weigh in?

I've always been on the fence about guitars with P90s. I had a Tokai Love Rock that I put a set of Gibson P94's in (humbucker sized P90s) and I hated it. Strangely, I've been through 4 sets of pickups in my Tele trying to get to a fat, chunky P90 tone I just need to quit him-hawing around and try something like the MM90.

I wouldn't say my MM90's are fat or chunky.......a little more "edgy" than fat or chunky....more of a penetrating sound.....though with tone rolled back a bit and increased volume you definately can a get "full" sound

9lbs 2ozs????? !!! Are you sure the previous owner didn't fill the trem cavity with lead? The EBMM website gives the weight as 6lbs 13......7oz more with trem (ie 7lbs 4). No idea why yours might be so heavy...that's almost the same as a Stingray bass (9lbs 5). Still, you obviously like it!

yeah but he's got 64 - 350 gauge strings on it so it would be a bit heavier

Bought it new- ordered it in the summer as a treat after getting a new job- got it just before christmas. I never thought that it might be the tow cables I was using for strings...

Anyhoo- I'm really pleased with it. I can now proudly say "I enjoy playing with my third ball" etc etc.

I am going to pronounce myself the official heaviest Axis owner (or should that be owner of the heaviest axis?) in the world. Any challengers?

I have 3 axis sports..2 are fly weight,,but #3 is definitely a heavy..all sound and play beautifully..mm90s rule..for me,anyway..

I've been thinking a lot more about the weight of my Axis Super Sport (with MM90s) recently and wondering how it compared to other Music Man ASS's. I eventually came across this thread and would like to throw mine in for the weigh-in. I have an electronic scale (from Costco) and following the several readings I took, it averaged close to 10.1 pounds! So maybe thats the new champion?

It certainly looks and sounds beautiful, but is much harder on my neck and back than my EVH, which feels like half the weight!

I'm glad I'm not the only one that has a freak Axis. Don't get me wrong, I love my Axis,but I'll have to get rid of it now and find a heavier one.

I eventually came across this thread and would like to throw mine in for the weigh-in. I guess the weight difference lies in the fact that the MM90 ASS's are built using Ash instead of Basswood. My MM90 is definately heavier than my HH ASS. It also has trem and piezo on it which also adds to the weight. Still not a heavy guitar though compared with some.
