So I have probably done more playing in the last 4 days than I can really remember doing in a four day period. Consequently I appear to be developing a new blister on my index finger that was already calloused somewhat...fun!

First of all the bass is a stunner, and the color is incredible in person. One of the local GC's has a Sterling in MG, but this color looks even better on a Bongo. Fit and finish was excellent coming out of the case. Sound is great although a little mellow for my tastes. I had it strung up with Sadowsky Flats and while it sounds good, I think I want a more aggressive sound and less tension. Most likely sometime this week I will throw the slinky's back on and order a set of TI jazz rounds from the Dude (when will he be back?).

The bass is super responsive to changes in right hand technique, but not very forgiving on left hand technique. I am finding that when I use to much of the pad of my fingers to 'fret' that I get a thin sound from the D and G strings past the 4th fret. I tried raising the action a bit on those strings and it help a little bit, but its not quite there yet. I need to adjust my left hand technique and have already found that I am hearing less and less of this thinness, so we will see how it goes.

The single H is a great fretless sound. My biggest concern right now are the piezos. All of the piezo dials are turned completely up, and it seems like I only get about 75% of the volume of the magnetic pickups, and to be honest the only tonal difference seems very slim, like the mag except muted and with a slight thud. I think doing some experimenting with some different strings is necessary. For all you other piezo users how do you compare the volume between the Mags and the piezo?

Overall I am fairly happy, but a little concerned with piezos, I definately need to spend some more time with it.

NOT an easy color to photograph, there is really more of a champagne type color to it.

The Piezo pickup is bound to be lesser in volume and I never use it alone while performing. If I want a little piezo action I'll usually have the piezo no more than 70% as I feel that offers enough of the airy element I'm looking for. The piezo is a subtle effect but I think it adds alot when you use it right. I'd also try messing with the eq when using alot of piezo. I'll usually mix in more low-mids and lows to make up for the piezo's often harsh sound. It might take a while but I'm sure you'll find some very nice sounds with the mixture of piezo and magnetic pickups. I had decided on getting a MG fretless Bongo before the BC color had been announced-I think we know how that ended up. MG is on the top of my list for my next EBMM though.

Enjoy!

I have a fretless Stingray with piezo. The piezo volume is pretty much just as loud as the standard pickup.

You can try to up the string gauge by a size if the G and D sound too thin- ie if they are a .40 and a .60 then move them up to a .45 and a .65. Higher tension strings tend to not be as sensitive to finger variations as light strings are.

Also, if you want a more aggressive sound, or want that typical "mwah," you'll probably be better off putting a set of nickel rounds on rather than flats, most of which are naturally more mellow and thumpy.

I could have gotten a MG sterling when I bought my Honeyburst SR4 a few weeks ago but I really wanted a "regular" SR and figured I already had the sterling electronics in my SR5.Now that i'm done trying to convince myself, I still want the Sterling  Mabye in a few months.............

VoG

I tried to post this yesterday but my connection at work kept dying on me. 98% of my unhappiness has been solved. I threw the slinkys back on that came with the bass and its a whole other instrument. There is now a perceptiple change in sounds between the mag and piezo pickups. Even though the slinkys are thinner gauge then the flats, I am not having the thin sound/buzziness on the D and G strings. The Piezos are louder and the overall tone is exactly what I had in my head when I ordered.

My playing problems were primarily caused by the tension on the flats. I definately like low tension strings, my favorite being the TI jazz rounds, which will be making an appearence soon. Basically, for me this bass now has the Voice of G-d (henceforth refered to as "the VoG", go ahead and steal that for your own purposes) that I was hoping for.

Me= :D

Have you tried the TI Jazz Flats on this bass?

Has anyone? Those are my favorite flats....
Got 'em on my '79 Sabre...love 'em! In all fairness, though, I haven't tried the EB Flats yet.

My only problem with flats in general is that my fingertips don't roll right off of them with the same ease as RW's.

Maybe some Fast-Fret to slicken-up the strings?
