John Scofield:

Loud Jazz

Pick Hits Live

Blue Matter

I bought these this week after having to play a couple of Scofield tunes in school and I must say they currently have me f@#ked up! Gary Grainger's tune is killer, not to mention the tunes and everyone's playing is incredible. Grainger and Dennis Chambers (on Drums) are so tight that they're one instrument. If you can only get one to start with, Loud Jazz should be first.:p

I go to LAMA!!! :D

Edit: I think it was just as trio with Larry Young on Organ and John McLaughlin on Guitar (Mahavishnu), but I could be mistaken, as well. :)

Wow,

You're right---small world! Doug does the funk ensembles on Mondays for the bass students in the second and third phases. Great guy. I enjoyed playing with him. Yes, there are just two of us MusicMan/Bongo players in this particular class representing.

...This is too funny... :D

Anything with Bernie Edwards after he picked up a Stingray.

Hmmm...

Just before he died, they recorded a show he and Nile Rodgers did with a new "Chic" lineup called "Live at the Budokan." I've seen video clips of him playing a Pre-EB 'Ray (Natural, of course) during that concert on the VH1 Classic Channel. I know it's available on CD, and I think it might be on DVD, as well!:D I could be wrong, but to my knowledge, he has always either used a MusicMan or Fender P-Bass on Chic's recordings.

Just so you all know, the two pictures I have (the sleeve of "Pick Hits Live") of Gary Grainger show him with a Pre-EB Sunburst StingRay with Maple neck and black pickguard...Classic! ... :p

Live at Budokan is outstanding for sure, and BE's tone is to die for. One of the biggest contributing factors to me getting a 2 band 'Ray was that disc...

Good point. Just be aware that EWF has been around for a long time and they have a lot of hits that do not get nearly as much attention as they should. Meaning, the following songs by them are grossing overplayed (and now very irritating to me):

Shining Star, September, and Sing A Song.

Then there are the hits that are overplayed yet I can never get tired of:

Can't Hide Love and That's The Way of the World (both jam session standards), Fantasy, Let's Groove, Boogie Wonderland (with the Emotions).

Some underappreciated songs:

Devotion, Reasons, Serpentine Fire, And Love Goes On, Fall In Love With Me, SOS (System of Survival), Keep Your Head To The Sky.

On this note, I would highly recommend a recent double disc release called "The Essential Earth Wind, and Fire" that has 34 songs hand-picked by Maurice White himself!:D

Yeah,

I know what you mean. I definitely have a Natural 2 Band 'Ray on the radar screen myself, a la Louis Johnson and Bernard Edwards!:D :p

There is a reggae band called Third World that does and excellent rendition of "Keep Your Head to the Sky". It's on the Reggae Ambassador CD which is just awesome all the way through.

I really like EWF too. I saw them in May of '04 when they came through Dallas with Chicago. That was one incredible show with Verdine tearing it up with EWF and Jason Scheff (Jerry's son) singing and keeping the bass groove with Chicago. When they closed the show with both bands on stage for four songs, two from EWF and two from Chicago, they were on fire.

I'm always looking to increase my Reggae collection. I'll have to check it out.:)

In 1975, a musician friend turned me on to "That's the Way of the World." I was a huge fan throughout the late 70's with their "Gratitude", "Spirit", and "All n All" albums (vinyl, of course).

This was during the same time that I first heard Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Return to Forever ("Romantic Warrior" still blows my mind). An incredible time of discovery for me.

BTW, a quick search for Scofield on the iTunes music store turned up 20 albums .

Yeah,

Romantic Warrior is a must-have and such a great album to listen to all the way through. But, I'll admit, even though Stanley is an incredible electric bass player, I'm more a fan of his upright playing (as I started out playing upright first and hope to get back into it very soon). But I would be a fool to deny the magic of the first album I heard with Stanley as a 12 year-old upright bass player in orchestra class, School Days.:p

As for iTunes, right on, just make sure you get the whole track list of each album I recommended. I can't recommend just certain songs, as they all are great with amazing bass playing, tight pocket, and beautiful melodies. :) :) :)

Speaking of SR's, check out Jeff Lorber's early albums entitled 'Water Sign,' 'Galaxian,' and 'Wizard Island.' All three albums feature Danny Wilson playing the hell out of a SR.

Yeah, I just picked up Lorbers " Definitve Collection" ( I think that's what it's called) just for that very reason. 10 or 11 of the 16 tracks are from those three albums. Danny Wilson kicks butt on his Stingray.

I guess he's (Danny Wilson, not Lorber) in the " Where are they now" catagory.
