Has anyone ever added a thumb rest like this to a Sterling H?

.:: Fender®.com ::.

I'm getting ready to order a new Sterling and would prefer an H model so I can switch the pickup between series and parallel, but the problem for me is I really need somewhere to rest my thumb if there is no neck pickup.

Thanks.

I'll place my thumb depending on the song i'm playing either on the edge of the pickup or on the edge of the neck (at the body joint) on both my Stingray 5 and Sterling 5 basses. Both of which are H configuration.

I've never seen add a thumb rest on a Stingray or Sterling H config bass.

I've seen it added onto a Stingray. Have yet to see it on a Sterling.

When I switched off a Jazz, I had a problem figuring out where to put my thumb down (I always had it on the neck pickup). Now I play on the bridge pickup and am completely comfortable. I once had a six string where I rested on the end of the fingerboard (it was extended to 27 frets).

My advice is to try different places and figure out what you are comfortable with before you modify your instrument. You may find that resting on the pickup is comfortable for you, or even on the neck.

former J bass player here too....

+1 on trying it before modfying your new instrument.

i've been playing my sterling H for almost 2 years. I bought an HS SR5 recently and everytime i wanna put my thumb on the single coil it feels really unconfortable now.

Yes - go to my photo album (GAS) and you'll see my Sterling H with standard black thumbrest. I had my local repair guy cut it down a bit so that it ended up the same height as the pup - and it works great. I found that the tension was too high at the bridge for certain styles - and with no other pup, there was nowhere to anchor my thumb. Folks who are used to a J or P will find this to be a good mod. If you don't like it, all you have to do is get another pickguard to cover the holes. Let me know if you want a close-up pic and I'll take it and post it.

I plan on making a little thumbrest out of some wood scrap to go between the double buckers on my Bongo, and I'm planning on epoxying that to a replacement pickguard.

I can't stand the idea of me putting two extra screws in the beautiful Bongo and I don't want to permanently damage the gorgeous python PG either

i stand corrected. a thumb rest that won't need to have new holes in the body sounds nice.
