As for a base to visit the Grand Canyon, I feel you would be better off spending the day in Sedona, and then driving to Flagstaff for the night. BUT, don't go back to t I-17! Take the winding road up through Oak Creek Canyon! GREAT VIEWS! Sedona is NOTORIOUSLY expensive! Unfortunately, the town has become one huge tourist trap. So, beware!

There's a motel called THE WHITE HOUSE INN that's around $50 a night with great views, no frills (as in no pool), but clean comfortable rooms.

Sorry for the temporary hijack BP, but this is some of the best our country has to offer in terms of jaw dropping/at a loss for words scenery and would make any shindig even more memorable to those able to swing it.

Oh yeah! I had forgotten about that place. Stayed there once when we did a survey of a local road. It is cheap. And completely no frills. But as Keith said, great views!

I will vouch for Sedona as well! My girlfriend and I drive there every six months or so to walk around the Red Rock State Park (I'd say that we hike but I don't really consider myself a hiker) and eat at a great place called the Heartline Cafe. I recommend the fish, it's amazing!

+1 on driving Phoenix to Sedona to the Canyon via Oak Creek Canyon. Amazing scenery!

You have to stop at Tlaquepaque in Sedona and have beer and a meal at the Oak Creek Brewery and Grill.
