To Float or not Float...

Forgive me EVH and Dudley but, as an experiment, I decided to SLIGHTLY float the trem on my MM90 SS and ASS w/piezo.
It's subtle, but I found it a lot easier to use the trem, it was more expressive (in that I can now apply true vibrato-up and down pitch) and the strings come back much closer in tune than before.
The float is not enough to affect the piezo negatively.

Of course the down side is warble if you palm the bridge and slight flatness on double/triple stops.

Has anyone else "floated their ASS" around here? And, has anyone used a tremsetter or equivalent with success on their EBMM?

I float my 20th Silo, and the Petrucci automatically floats. No need for a tremsetter with the locking tuners. You may want to grease the nut slots.

I'm about to float my silo, and I've floated the sub1 before. Isn't a big deal for me on the palm muted stuff, you just have to use more finesse. The only reason I set the sub back to flush is because it was my only guitar at the time

I have the Tremol-no on my Luke and it's great for me because I do some drop-d tuning in my band and it locks the trem in place. I can set it for "hardtail" mode or "dive only" mode and the rest of the strings stay in tune when i drop my E to D. It's been great for me. Hope that helps or what you were looking for.

locking tuners don't influence the need for a tremsetter-the tremsetter stabilizes the springs so that trem acts like a hardtail but still floats.
Thanks for the slot advice but I do use nut sauce on my balls (insert joke here...) yet the notorious sharp low E and G still rear their ugly head when the trem is flush.

BTW, do the Silos and LUkes ship flush?...

Silos are flush from the factory, but the Luke is floated to pull back three half steps

I floated my Cherry Burst Axis' Floyd when I had it. Worked better flush

That seems like reason enough to show my hardtail AL's. they do AL double stop bends quite nicely. who needs trem's anyway.

I like the floating trem on my JP, but my tremolo AL is not set up as floating, and neither is my Luke (piezo).

At one point my AL was set up to float like the Luke (raise open G to A#), but I wound up setting it back on the body for both stability and personal comfort.

Nothing wrong with giving it a try! See how you like it.

Since I like to bend my Al's trem is set flush. Although getting a hardtail AL is a good alternative and that reason might get it past the Finance Minister (my wife).

As far a greasing the nut gun grease works as well as the nut sauce and is much cheaper.

I use a tremsetter, which works greatbut is difficult to get the perfect setting - to tight and you feel the 'notch' in it's stable position, too loose and it's not worth having. I'm still experimenting! It definately helps keep tunng stable though.

BTW, locking nuts have nothing to do with tremsetters you can have either/or/both... they acheive different things.

Tremsetters....*shudder* Pain in the butt to install. I'm going to try a Tremel-no next.

Has anybody tried putting ground graphite in their nutts? That can help as well.

Floating = not for me, my hand resting on the bridge made me more out of tune than I usually am !!!
