I want to experiment with some different tone capacitors in my Silo. What kind are available for guitar and what are the difference between them and where do I get them?

Thanks!

Since you're working with a top-loaded guitar like the Silo, I would highly recommend soldering in some leads on the tone pot and using alligator clips to experiment with different tone cap values.

The general idea is higher value caps have a more drastic treble roll-off than lower-value caps.

Get one of those Radio Shack variety packs and find a value that works for you. If you're so inclined, you can shell out more bucks for a higher quality brand of cap.

Ok so RS sells average quality Tone caps and you think I should swap them in and out with the stock one to see what I like the best am I right?

And what about a "No Load Tone"

Thanks,

Hi there,

a no load pot gives the maximum highs and overtones at max because there is no load to the pickup that reduces its resonance-peak, meaning the pickup sounds much brighter.

What I don´t understand is that guitarplayers leave them 22n-caps in their guitars wondering why they never use the tonepots...I can tell ya, it´s too much!
Something in between 2,2n and 10n will do the job perfect!

In general, the capacitance will determine how deep the cut off frequency can get.
The resistance of the potentiometer then just gives the minimum cut-off frequency.
(I know, technically simplified, but it works here well)

With that in mind I also modded my Petrucci. With the factory settings it sounded relatively fat, by turning the tonecap it got fatter and half the way down it just git muddy and mushy.
Swapping the 22n cap for a 6,8n made it a lot brighter, somehow "stratty".
Now I can go from the bright tones to the very fat tones just by turnin the pot.
Works perfect.

Give it a try :)

Cheers,
Swen

PS: The trick with the alligators is a good one! I do it the same way to check the right value.

PPS: Just buy a bunch o´ caps, they don´t cost that much as long as you don´t go for the "mojo-caps". I recommend Orange Drops 225 or Mallories or XiCon, they work well for the money but every foil-capacitor will do.
