Is there a resource anywhere that has a list of songs and the settings to achieve the song's tone on a particular Bass?
If not songs, then genres?

I know I should experiment and choose what I like, but I've never so much as attempted to set a tone before. There is a bewildering array of settings just on my Bass (once I get my hands on it), add the Ampeg stack and the options are legion. So some pointers would prevent me curling up into a ball and sobbing.

Instruction manuals tell you what the switches & dials do but not the result of doing it! That's for my amp at least, I haven't seen my Bass's manual yet. If there is one.

Not that I can recommend a particular book or
guide, but it would help if you discard the idea
that there are setting that are appropriate for
certain tunes, genres etc and look more into
learning the general concepts of what controls
actually do.

IOW forget about the "Jazz-bass setting" or a
"heavy metal setting". Just get familiar with
such things as "neck PU is deeper and bridge
is briter" and "mid tones magnify the low end".

These, and other "rules", are basics of how
these machines work. Also, a very important
"setting" is where along the string you play
your right hand.

Get this stuff into you and you'll be able to
bring out whatever tone is in your head. The
various tunes and genres you listen to will
put the tones into your head, and you'll be
able to call those up without thinking way
too much about it.

The same "settings" don't always work for
the same tune eveery time cuz rooms are
a big influence, and your bandmates are
prolly not consistent in how they play or
how they set their amps either. You hafta
set up your tone in current context, in the
sonic environment that you are part of, in
the moment [or hour or day .... ].
