I have run into a guitar melody that sounds fairly easy to play but I'm having a terrible time trying to play it. Grrrrrrr!!!
The song is "Room 335" by my favorite guitarist, Larry Carlton.......who needs to ditch that gibby and get a EBMM Silo Spec with a whammy bar. :)

The part I am having a hard time picking is the following........

E--------------------------------------------------------------
B--------------------------------------------------------------
G--5-4-2-4-2-4-2-----------------------------------------------
D---------4------34---2----------------------------------------
A-------------------5----0-------------------------------------
E--------------------------------------------------------------

It is very hard for me to get the pick to skip from the 3rd to the 4th string (G to D string) fast enough to play it. I've given up trying to "pick" it, so now I'm trying to use my fingers instead. Just when I think I have it down, I turn on the video recorder and proceed to screw it up every time.

Here is a YouTube video of "Mr 335" and "Luke" playing it. I can play it okay in the beginning when they're going slow, but can't consistently once they're up to speed. Bastages! lol j/k

Have you guys got any "finger-twisters" that are harder to play than they sound?

PS: And yes, I AM farging uncoordinated.

Edit: BTW, Larry, ditch the cigarettes! Tell him Luke!! :D

Yeah, actually I'm (trying) to hybrid pick it also. I start the riff using the pick on an up-pick and then do the string jump picking with my fingers.
I finally got Journey's "Lights" solo using my fingers to pick the decending riff.....after a bit of practice.
Hopefully I'll be able to add Room 335 to my YouTube page before the decade is over.

Start off slowly, I think every lick is possible if given the right time to focus on it. I always wanted to play everything as fast as my guitar hero's. This would lead to frustrations.

I finally decided to use a metronome and started ridiculously slow. One piece of advice I can give and helps me a lot is this.

Increase the bpm by 8 every time you can play the lick close to perfect. Then lower it 4 bpm, once you nail it as well increase again 8 bpm.

Not bad, here is the last Chord of the James Bond theme for you. As many get this wrong.
E--2----------------------------------------------------
B---------4---------------------------------------------
G---------4---------------------------------------------
D---------------5---------------------------------------
A--------------------------------------------------------
E0--------------------------------------------------------

Never seen a chord tabs for RM 335 and they are all wrong... working on them for you.
And why would Luke tell Larry to give up on the Cigs? Luke hasnt...

I smoked for ~39 years......cough cough wheez cough........before I quit. I was up to over 2 1/2 packs/day. I used to lead sing in the bands I was in. I can't sing songs that I used to sing anymore without running out of breath.
Those damn things are extremely addictive and are the devil incarnate. If I didn't have a death scare I would still be smoking. duh!

I'll be smoke free for three years as of Sept 1st. I still enjoy the smell/aroma of cigarette smoke however. I don't mind a whiff or two of 2nd-hand smoke once in a while.

<Sorry for the tangent>

G-----0
D-----0

Don't bother doing a tab for Room 335 on my account, I don't know, or try to learn hardly any songs all the way through anymore.
The chords are something like Dmaj7 Dbm7 Bm7 Dbm7, Dmaj7 Dbm7 Bm7 A....

I'd use alternate picking for this. Not too difficult, IF you start on an downstroke. the string skipping sections will be doing "outside" picking, which might be easier to do (for me anyways). IF you begin on an upstroke, those skipping notes will be on "inside" picking, which to me isn't that easy, though that's what John Petrucci advocates.

It's all about which is more comfortable for you.

Do you (or does anyone else) have a vid of "Room 335" up on YouTube yet.......for my humility? lol

"Room 335", "Rosanna", and "Lights" are the most difficult solos I have so far attempted. Perhaps someday, many years from now I might try to play that Ed guy from Holland's "Beat It" solo, or Luke's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" solo. It could be a future special Olympics event. :D
