Best CDs of All Time

On a desert island I would have to say:
1. Avail-Live from the bottom of a hill
2. Boy Sets Fire- After the Eulogy
3. Counting Crows- Recovering the Satelites (for somber days)
4. Goldfinger- Hangups (for when you need to sing)
5. Ben Folds Five- Whatever and Ever Amen

And who knows, If I had a sixth choice I might even bring along my own cd.

Top 5

Here's my list of five. Like 'em or hate 'em, each of these artist's music is instantly recognizable. They following their own vision, ignoring popular trends.

I'm excluding "greatest hits" type albums, which would make the choice too easy.

Not in any particular order:

U2 - Joshua Tree
Sting - Bring on the Night (Live)
Nirvana - Nevermind
Springsteen - The River
Dave Matthews Band - Under the Table and Dreaming

Honorable mention (next five): Van Halen - Van Halen; Elvis Costello - My Aim is True; Switchfoot - New Way to be Human; Something by the Beatles; Sarah McGlochlan - Mirror Ball (If yer stranded on an island you have to have something to remember women)

Top 5 CDs

Man, 5 CD's eh?

1. Rage Against The Machine (Self Titled)

2. Tupac's Greatest

3. No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom

4. Sister Hazel's Fortress

5. Metallica (Self Titled)

Runs the gamut eh? I know Tupac doesn't even use guitars really... but come on... thug life baby. I wanted to put Soundgarden's Superunknown on the list too... it would probably be sixth. That reminds me.. man if Chris Cornell got together with Rage like they talked about a year ago, that CD would probably top this list.

Awe man, I forgot DMB.

5 CD's just isn't enough, and you know, if you want to be a hardnose about it, Tupac's album is really two CD's. Shooooooots, I forgot Aerosmith too. Gotta love Aerosmith. Screw it, let's forget all the CD's and just get 1 or 2 of the girls from Snoop's list. Satisfaction guaranteed.

4.Bob Marly-Legends
5.A self made dance compilation, hey a man's got to excersise.

It was the second Police album, called "Regatta de Blanc." Along with Message in a Bottle, it included Police classics Walking on the Moon, Bed's to Big without you, Bring on the Night, etc.

But of course you guys can't remember the title. Weren't you still eating Strained spinich and kidneys out of a Gerber jar when that album came out?

#*@#!! Shaun made a good call by throwing in some Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix. Although Brian might have got the most bang for his pick by going with the Ben Harper 2 disc set. I think Ben Harper combines a lot of Marley's vocal and lyrical styling with Jimi's ferocious, cranked up Marshall guitar attitude... The only performaer I've seen who can get the whole crowd on their feet for an hour while he's sitting down playing slide.

Here's another music question for ya'. If you could send an evening jamming and talking music with any musician (living or dead), who would you pick? Or better yet pick your own "all star" band to jam with for the night.

Here's my invitation list for an evening to hang out and jam. I'd make sure and have the tape rolling!

Lead Vocals
David Bowie - just a great rock voice.

Eddie Vedder - It just sounds better if you have somebody who's well on their way to insanity to sing some of those dark songs.

Lead Guitar
Eddie Van Halen - (He was way better before he changed his name to Edward)

Ben Harper - Lap Steel and Marshalls cranked up to 10!

Rick Nielson - (of Cheap Trick) Obscure choice I know, but in the early days before Cheap Trick got all popular and commercial, this guy was doing some wild, aggressive leads with great melodies.

Rhythm Guitar
Malcom Young - Underrated 'cause he only does one thing. But he does it as well as anybody; Locking down some of rock's greatest rhythm hooks for ACDC.

Edge - Took electric guitar to a whole new place. Everyone else is still trying to find the way.

Dave Matthews - Used the nylon string guitar in a whole new pop-rock context. Amazingly creative.

Bass
Sting, Paul McCartney, and me - All three are great melodic, creative, groove oriented players (OK well mostly Sting and Paul, and this way I get to have Sting and Paul sing too.) Paul also switches to piano and hammond B-3 when called for. I figure you'll need a little keys on a few songs to break up the wall of guitars.

Harmonica
Bruce Springsteen - Not necessarily the world's best harmonica player, but I definitely want him in my band and we've already got too many guitars.

Drums
Prince (or should I say the artist who was formerly known as Prince, but then he wasn't, but now he's a Jehova's Witness so don't be surprised if you see him riding a bike up to your house and knocking on your door wearing a white short-sleeved dress shirt with a funny black tie trying to convert you. Or is that the Mormans!?)
Anyway, I don't know if he's the greatest drummer, but another monster creative talent that I'd want in my jam.

Background vocals
John Lennon, Bob Marley, and Elvis - Just cause I would like to hang out with these guys and hear some of their stories of rock's early days!

This way I've got a whole load of the greatest songwriters in the room too (Lennon and McCartney, Sting, Springsteen, Dave Matthews, Bob Marley, etc.)

Now if we can just keep the egos and the drugs outa' the way for a few hours . . .

-it may take forever to actually understand this one.
2. So - Peter Gabriel
-Tony Levin's silky bass playing to go to sleep with
3. The Yes Album - Yes .. nah, I know every lick on that album; I can just play it in my head from memory... maybe... Tales from Topographical Oceans.
4. Yanni - Live at the Acropolis
- in case there are women on this lonely island.
5. Weather Report 8:30.
