Wow what can i say, This Is just one incredible Bass, For me these 4 bolt Ernie Ball Music Man Stingrays are the very best Basses ever made, not taking away from todays Basses at all.

Everybody has their favorites and these just happened to be mine. This is a 1990 the very first year for vintage sunburst over a beautiful Light weight Ash body,

4 Bolt neck, 2 band pre, Very flat 58 PBass feeling neck, Oh and yes, weights in at 6.8 Pounds.Another feather.

OH YEAH. To me this is a torture that I only have 43 of these but im sure more will come. Thank You All Again and if I May. Bless you Big Poppa and Crew, you Nailed it on these. Dave Jeffrey

I now own 79 Stingrays, bongos and Sterlings as my last count recalls.

Dave, I'm assuming that means you own 43 Stingrays. How many bongos do you own?

I Mean I have 43 of these 4 bolts, one Bongo as of today, one 1977 Inca Silver Mint Stingray white Pickup, 4 Sterlings, and 30 Mixed 6 Bolt Stingrays in Various Colors. That sums it up as it stands for today.

You are a nut :) I like nuts, however, and I'm curious about a couple of things.

Do you have this army of Stingrays all set up in view, or are they in their cases?

Do you have any other basses or other musical instruments in your collection?

Well up to a Few weeks ago I've Had a Vintage Fender Collection of over 150 Fender basses, but been selling them off for all I ever Use Is Ernie Ball Music Man Basses,

I do own a few Boutique Basses, Like Warrior, ETC. They Look Good but my whole sound is Music Man Or Fender and seems more Stingray & Bongo-ish these last 15 years.

Hey Mr. Nut...

Should I post the pic of you standing around all your Fender's??

It was such a lovely Christmas card, but a MM version would be nicer!

When did that truss rod type of installation stop?

Do you mean when did they change from the bullet rod to the wheel??

The wheel truss rod came about around late 1990 / 1991.

The wheel truss rod is a way better design as far as how the rod works with the neck, And since Ernie Ball Started it everyone else has pretty much ripped their idea off.

So many Bass & Guitar companies now use the wheel truss rod setup.

Maybe a little earlier.

The capstan wheel truss (6 bolt neck) was featured on the SR5 with its introduction in 1988. As I understand it, the SR4 followed suit very soon after...late 1988 or early 1989.

However, the bullet truss (4 bolt neck) on the SR4 ran concurrently with the wheel for a time as examples of the former extend into 1990 (even 1991?).

The wheel actually appeared earlier on one or two of the Guitars before being added to the Basses.

Man, I love you guys, you're all so informed and intimidating it gives a warm fuzzy feeling.

As for the bass... Man, That is Sexy. 'nuff said(used in the marvel comics context).

You could be very much right on this, because i've never owned a 5 string to know, it's just been with my own experience I personaly have never seen a 4 Bolt Stingray with the Wheel Rod.

The earliest i've seen was either a late 90 or 91.
But Im sure back when Big Poppa was testing they started in the late 80's.

Dave, the info concerning the introduction period for the truss wheel on the SR4 came from one of the guys at EB a couple of years ago.

This seems to be the history:

The capstan wheel truss first appeared on the Silhouette Guitar (not Bass) in 1985. It was included on the Steve Morse Guitar in 1986. It was then added to the SR5 Bass right from its introduction in 1988. I'm pretty sure this is when a 6 bolt neck plate appeared, for the very first time, on a Bass (to coincide with the truss wheel).

The truss wheel (and related 6 bolt plate) appeared on the SR4 a little later and not at the same time as the SR5. Prior to that, the SR4 had been a bullet truss, 4 bolt neck, exclusively

But the introduction of the truss wheel (6 bolt) on the SR4 was just that. It didn't put a full stop on the bullet truss (4 bolt). EB either kept making the bullet truss necks for a time or were using existing necks untill stocks were depleted. It would be interesting to find out the situation.

So, after the introduction of the truss wheel to the SR4, you had a situation where the SR4 either had a 6 bolt neck (with truss wheel) or a 4 bolt neck (with bullet truss).

Both neck types ran together on the SR4 untill the bullet finally disappeared at the end of 1990 (or early 1991). From that time on, the 6 bolt (and related truss wheel) appeared exclusively.

Hey Mr Nut, i have a very similar bass to your '90 Sr4 Burst 2band EQ. The sound is just stunning as is the neck...hand just glides along it...It was made in jan 92 and has birdseyemaple neck, metal battery, black pickguard (originally white)etc etc with bridge mutes.I was told these basses are rare because they still had some transition period parts on them but dnt know anything else..can anybody shed some light on my basses history? Serial Numberr 33797...

Many Thanks

Brad, the bridge on yours and Daves Bass is an older style similar to the Pre-EB top load bridges. Because the string grooves are centred on the saddles, the strings form an angle to their anchor point at the end of the bridge.

Circa 1992, EBMM introduced the new "Flea" bridge. The saddle grooves were cut deeper and moved to the extreme left. The strings now had a straight pull across the saddles. But the whole bridge was also moved a little off to the right to avoid the strings becoming off-centred to the left of the pole pieces on the pickups.
