So my local store finally got their shipment of 2007 balls so I raced over to check out the fully loaded JP7 Mystic Dream which I had been waiting to try out.
Sure enough I couldn't see it on the racks so I asked if it had been sold already.
One of their guys sheepishly admitted that when an employee was taking it out of the case he smacked it against a table and took a big chunk out of the finish.
Brutal!
He says they are currently attempting repairs and should have it on display soon at a discounted price at which point I can buy it at the cheaper rate or order a new one with a "mere" 6 month lead time.

Hard to believe they wouldn't have been more careful with something of this calibre especially with the upgraded finish.

So I haven't seen the damage yet but assuming it only brings the price down a couple of hundred loonies (lowly Canadian dollars) I'm not sure if it's something I could live with or if it's something that would drive me insane every time I looked at it.

Any opinions?

Of course now I've discovered this wonderful forum you guys have also got me thinking that I need a Silo, a Y2D, and maybe an AL,so I could just buy one of those first!:D

Problem solved!!!..........maybe......

Great forum by the way...very glad I found it...

welcome aboard - definitely you need those guitars, but you should also get a nice Axis Super Sport:D

as for ordering and waiting vs. buying a damaged guitar? depends on how bad you want it and how bad your b.a.s. is (Ball Acquisition Syndrome).

personally, I would probably bite the bullet and place an order and start marking the days on the calendar.

cheers and happy shopping

Joel

If it's noticeable I wouldn't touch it. In 6 months time you'll have forgotten about the $$$$ you saved and it'll bother you every time you look at it. No point in paying 90% of a huge sum to end up with something that's "not bad". Bite the bullet, take the wait & go for perfection..........mind you then you might ding it yourself 2 days later!!

Hmmmm!! 2 "bite the bullets" in 2 posts. I'll have to get some new Cliché Avoidance Software installed.

It will have to be a whole body replacement. There would be no patching that kind of blemish, especially on a MD finish. Cars that are painted in the dupont version of the color (very similar) have to be totally repainted in the case of scratches, etc. Touch ups are not possible. A body replacement would not be noticeable, especially since you never saw it or played it before that clumsy employee whacked it...

The discount is in your favor. It is not totally 'original' anymore, so they cannot sell it as such. I would jump on it.

Thank guys - good advice.

And you're right JMB27, it turns out I DO need an Axis Super Sport as well! I just didn't know it yet.

On a related note, how do you convince your wife you need yet another guitar?
Mine isn't buying any of the old excuses.

The fact that you even asked the question, to me, indicates the damged part would drive you nuts (as it would me - I like to blemish my guitars myself, thank you). "Bite the Bullet" and order a new one - but to make a point - I'd cancel my order with your current dealer and find another who you know will not make that mistake!

OR, do what I do: when I order a guitar I demand that the box it shipped in not be opened until I am there to do it myself (make it a condition of the sale) - that way I never have your problem......AND, I always get all the case candy that is supposed to come with the guitar.

My two cents.

.... there are some things in life that are beyond explanation - so far my wife has been very good about my gear acquistion.

it helps too, that I have been rotating gear out as I have gotten new stuff in....

.... and of course, it helps if you can hide one or two pieces .... at least match them to the music room and maybe they will blend into the back-ground;)

I had to tell my fiance that it was an investment rather than just another toy. And in the case of us needing money quick, I could sell it for damn near what I paid for it. That is the truth, too. I take exquisite care of my balls (well just one ball right now, but soon to be ball(s)).

If you gig, you may not want to pass up the dent-n-scratch deal. Unless they took a chunk out of the body or chewed on it or something, the tone shouldn't suffer too bad, and then you could rock out at ease on stage knowing any new knicks would just give the first one company.

If thats not advantageous for you, order it up. I ordered mine in November and when the salesman paused from his conversation with EB to say, "...6 months...", I'll admit that my heart kinda dropped. I wasn't sure if I was willing to wait for something that long, but I had my heart set on it, and I'm glad I made the decision 3 seconds later to swipe my card :)

Either way, you're going to have a petrucci. Even if you order one, that damaged JP might sit on the rack for quite a while, and that means you have plenty of time to play it before you get your own.

Oh man, there's whole entire threads on this subject. My favorite was the "MM = this many Coach purses" post...:D

Easy to convince her if you marry the girl singer in the band. Then just make sure you have fewer guitars than she has stage outfits.
Mind you, come divorce time when you have to start selling them to buy somewhere to live............still, let's wait for my Oprah Winfrey appearance for that one!!
Anyway, back to the point...how long will this body replacement take?
And before we all slag off the poor helpless fool who damaged it....how many of us have NEVER stupidly damaged a guitar??

I'm curious too, which one was it?

Well I don't want to get these guy in trouble or anything, or seem like I'm bashing your dealers.

It's north of Toronto though and slightly to the right, up Highway 48.

My wife seems to think she should get a baby out of the deal if I get a new guitar - but that's gotta be worth, what, 7 new guitars??? 8 if it's a well behaved kid???

is it the new market one?

mistakes happen, no one is going to get people in trouble... if anything, the owner of the store might have given that employee a little talk on the care of their guitars.

1 guitar for a baby? thank goodness i'm not married yet and my gf doesnt know of this forum...

Do it! It takes less time to make a baby than it does to change your strings (even with EBMM locking tuners)
