From Mr. Trussbroken:

My rule of thumb for adjustment is (in play position):

*straight neck (no relief at 6th while depressing 1st and 12th).
*adjust strings for no buzz from around 4th to last frets.
*begin adding relief (small increments) to eliminate any buzz from 1st to 4th frets......
That's pretty much my method. Dozens of axes, crazy variety, never a single trip to a shop for setup. Good thing, as trips to the shop often result in an increased variety of basses .....

Notice that the method uses no numeric specs, just descriptions like "straight" and "buzz/no buzz". I call that 'set up by ear'. Notice Maddog specifies to check everything in *playing position*. That is NOT to be ignored. Those rubber mat things with the neck supporting post can lead you to believe that flat-on-its-back is the way to do set up. Nope.

It's a little thing called gravity.

Fine on the bench top, but pick it up and it'a out of wack (for fine adjustment).

IMO, the best adjustment is in the play position, while seated with the instrument nestled in your lap.

My 2 cents :D
