Butch, has to be the blue one .. wow I love that.

Have you investigated putting another pickup in the bridge position ?

My Al SSS has a seymour duncan 'Twang Banger' in the bridge and apparently gives you the twang of the tele as well as a quack of a strat. Not that expensive and can always put the original back in if need be.

Never played a tele so tough to compare whether the SD is doing what it says on the tin.

Sure there will be more experienced guys on here that have a slant on this but if the Al SSS does not give you exactly the sound from the bridge something like this could be a route to go

Much as I hate to talk about modding perfection... if good enough for Albert...

Cheers
Baz

Another reason I sold the Morse was to help fund the adoption of my daughter, who turns three today. She is still in S. Korea and we await the call to go and get her. It's a hard wait but we'll make it.
That's the real story here, congrats and I hope the wait is not to long for you :)

My Al blew away every Tele that I played with. After I had had it a couple of months, I got Evan Skopp (Duncan VP) to get me a Twang Banger baseplate to try underneath my AL's bridge pickup. This was when the Twang Banger was brand new and not even in production yet. The difference was noticeable but not show-stopping. It was meatier and fuller than the APS-2 with the metal strip.

Thanks Colin. We had some friends over and celebrated her 3rd b-day. Yes, the wait is long and even though I loved my Morse (as fickle as I was), it doesn't compare to that little girl and giving her a family that will love her and that she can love.

Congrats Butch! That's great news!

On the bridge p'up ... I've played with baseplates a bit and spoke to several notable pickup vendors about this. The consensus is that adding a baseplate to a pickup raises the inductance a bit and makes it a tad hotter. But it doesn't get you the "twang" that everybody associates with teles. That sound, in a large part, is due to the bridge construction and the overall guitar construction. Simply put ... if a guitar doesn't twang on it's own, there's nothing a pickup is going to add.

As for my two cents ... get the AL, come back soon with a progress report

Get the AL - it's the guitar for you

Remember this guy from a few years back?
Ever since I got my Albert Lee model, I have only played my Tele once. I played it for about 5 minutes and the Tele is harder to play and doesn't sound as much like a really good Tele as my Albert Lee does.

My Albert Lee sounds better than any Strat I have ever heard or played also.

Congrats Ernie Ball/Music man! Now, I have to figure out what to do with my Tele.

Buy the AL...
Play the AL...
Be the AL...

But I must warn you that if you pull the trigger, I must put you on double secret probation in the ALOC. No "what pup(s) should I change to, what if I change the wiring, trim pots, push/pulls, base plates, pole heights, etc". You can do all of those things you love to do on another guitar, even another AL. Just keep one in its original condition that you've been lamenting the loss of for years. If the best tele player in the world can make the switch and stick with it, so can you:)

It's ALOC 4L and we will welcome you back with open arrms
So let it be written...So let it be done

I can't argue with that. And the fact that you dug up my post from 7 years ago is impressive in and of itself. We will see what the future holds. The first priority is to get our new little girl home. Then, we'll get really serious about guitars. I gotta admit though, the AL SSS is the one I'm really leaning toward. It's the only guitar that, even to this day, I kick myself for selling.

Nice one Butch. You've even had the CIC of the ALOC chiming in!! lol.

I know everybody has their own opinions regarding pickup choices, whether it be Humbucker, Single coil or single coil MM90's. I know I'm incurring Rob's wrath as he's a big MM90 fan and he has played/owned many Als. .... but my fav is the SSS.
Link that with a Piezo and it's as close as you'll get to a "one trick pony". Remember that the Piezo brings the volume knob a tad closer but is a very small price to pay.

So Buttercream it is then???;)

It'll either be butter cream or trans blue; but I didn't see butter cream listed as a production finish for the AL.

nope.
that was a limited edition colour a while back.
you'd have to get a used one if you want that colour.

.... Trans Blue most likely; with a Vintage White Pearloid guard....

Trans Blue gets my vote Butch.

White Pearloid sure looks classy against the blue, but I must say that the Al with Abalone pick guard that Foggy posted above looks great too.

And best wishes to you and your family, exciting times; very special indeed.

Yeah, that Pacific Blue Burst is very nice. I would go with that in a heartbeat; but it, like Butter Cream, is not a production finish for the AL.:(

what  ? are you serious ? PBB is discontinued for the AL

I have checked and PBB is still available

Guys,

You know, all this stuff is great fun to talk about. It's so much fun for me to read your comments and suggestions because I know they're not lip service. All you guys really care; as fickle as I can be, most everyone on this board, even the man who owns the company, himself, has even lent his supportive opinion a few times.

All that said, having the guitar you believe you have always wanted is no caparison to getting our new daughter home. I was looking at our adoption blog this morning and was moved to tears (not too much as I'm at work and need to maintain my composure :D) when I read my wife's posting from earlier this morning.

She wrote about how 2 years ago today was the day we, as a family, saw Asher's pic from the Rainbow Kids website. My wife asked each member of my family to come look at a web page that had 6 kids' pics. We walked over separately and each one of us picked him. After that, we dropped our initial adoption endeavor. We were going to adopt from Kazakhstan. We decided to pursue the little boy from S. Korea. I can't even imagine not having him as part of our family. I say all that because I know it will be the same with our little girl.

Sorry for the rambling, I just wanted to say that, while I would love a new EBMM guitar (the best IMO), nothing compares to getting our little girl home and making her part of our family.

Cheers,
