Pete, I'm kinda curious, is your style/sound high gain?

Sometimes... I play everything from superclean to high-gain with the guts in the middle. I use a mix of Sovtek & JJ preamp tubes to get sparkling cleans and aggressive gain, and the power section is Sovtek 6L6.

Here's a rough clip I'll be hitting the studio with in a week or so. Polishing up the sections now. It's a decent representation of my "style" of playing. I used AL pos 4 for rhythm cleans, y2d bridge for rhythm w/ gain, JP6 bridge for bluesy leadwork, and switched to the JP6 neck for tapping lead.
Midi Drum warning!

Just run the amp @ 60 W with the inside 6L6 pair and move your combo speaker plug from 8 Ohms to 4 Ohms. You can get new tubes later. :)

I've been running it like that just as usual. Can I just take one from the outside and replace it with the burnt out one in the middle?

PS, that's quite an awesome tune! I'll buy a cd when it comes out.

Pete,
Nice job bud, I like it. It should sound awesome after cleaning it up in the studio. What did you use to record it so far, how many different tracks?

And the drums weren't that hateful...

fred

sorry for the hijack, if you want to send a PM that's cool...

Smokin playin, Pete! I can hear that bright high end of the Sovteks.

I also use standard JJ83's across the gain section, but have gone to NOS JAN Phillips in the V1 spot. What an amazing difference! You can find them for $35 at Doug's, worth every penny in spades. Seriously man, you might look into it. He also checks them for microphonics, as they have larger plates and can be microphonic in certain amps, particularly in combos. I bought 4 of them in original boxes from 1966. Doug's are the last of the 1980's military spec, and sound a bit better to my ears than my older ones. The V1 shapes the majority of an amp's tone, the beginning of the signal path.

One other thing. If you don't have a balanced triode tube in your phase inverter spot, you should, if you want the most from your amp.

As long as all four tubes have the same color code, you should be fine. But just to be safe, take the two outside tubes and put them in the center slots.

Wow, I wasn't expecting to get a reaction like that, thanks guys!

The clip was recorded with the amp switched to half power, and at bedroom levels. I find that for bedroom levels the amp gets pushed better with the half power switch, and a little bit of added depth with the depth mod.

Fred,
I used a Boss BR-532 Digital record (4trk, 32vtrk) with a VT-1030 microphone ($25). I did 1 track with the AL, 1 with the y2d, and 1 lead with the JP. I then went back and recorded some harmony leads on the 4th track, wiping out the Sterling I used for the bass. Drums were onboard.

Adam,
I won't be selling a cd, but if you want a copy when it's done, just stop in!

Candid,
I use a Sovtek in the V1 & V2, with JJs in the rest. I've got a list of tubes to try out in each slot for mega tone, but I just don't have the time to try them all out right now. When I do, I'll post a clip of the difference.

Cool, Pete. Looking forward to hearing what you hear. Erm, you didn't say which Sovteks you're using?

Preamps are 12ax7 Sovtek and JJ ECC83 --- power tubes are Sovtek 5881 (6L6)

Thanks, Pete. Sorry to bug you but this stuff really interests me.

There’s at least 5 different Sovtek 12AX7’s, so I was curious which you were using. For high gain, their 12AX7LPS is a great one. Puts a lot of meat on the bone and is also low noise, very musical too. I'm pretty sure stock Soldanos use these; at least my Astroverb head did.

D'Oh!!! :(

Is there a GC near you? Don't they have Mesa tubes?

BTW, Pete, great clip. I don't know if it's just my headphones or what, but something sounded like it was clipping. Otherwise, great job recording it too! Who makes that mic?

I know for a fact there was a bit of clipping goin on. The mic is a "V-Tech" probably made by someone in China

Sorry I just realized I listed the tubes in the wrong order.... V1 & V2 are JJ ECC83-S, and the other 3 are Sovtek 12AX7-LP

The JJs were cleaner on the clean channel, and more defined on the gain channel than the Sovteks were.

Thanks, Pete. LP's are quiet and JJ83's are really sweet sounding in V1 and 2. Makes sense to me. Still, if a JAN Phillips happens to pass your way, snag it for V1. I doubt you'll be sorry. These things used to sell for $4 in the day, some places getting $55 for them now. Soon, no more.

I never used my clean channel so much since I dropped them in V1. Good lord, they're sweet sounding. My amp's are sorta Brit classic rock sounding on the gain side, but I could never use my clean channel before. Just too ice picky, even with the fatter sounding long plate JJ803's. Add one Jan Phil in V1, voila! Now I'm on clean about half the time. Players underestimate the difference a single preamp tube can make. But I think you have to be a tone freak to get into it.
